regardless if you believe in atheism, chritianity, or haruhism, a bunch of people have basicly been trying to convince me(on this very website) that my beliefs are wrong and chastze me when I try to defend myself (eastern orthodox christian by the way) does anyone seriously believe that if they shout that they are wrong that they will submit to you?

Well, everyone likes to think they're right and they hate the fact when life and the people around them won't bend to their will.

I propose we go back in time and blow up a building, 'causing it to land on Maxamamillion, 'causing the world of the future to fall into nothingness as we recreate our timeline into a world no longer in ruin. Muwahahaha!

Wait... no, that's the plotline of a movie.

Forget I said the part with the time travel.

No, nor do I want to. I just wish that everyone would extend me that same courtesy. I don't tell people that they'll go to hell if they don't believe what I believe, so they certainly have no right to tell me that, especially without any proof.

Nope.

I can only hope to have people understand why I hold my believes rather than convert them. But sadly even that's a stretch.

No, besides I wouldn't bother to try. As long as he/she doesn't try and convert me, I'll afford him/her the same respect. However as soon as he/she starts trying to convert me, then I will become extremely vocal in exactly how I feel about his/her beliefs. ¬_¬

I am exactly the same. I don't understand this need for everyone to try and convince others their beliefs are right. It actually happened to me today, I was walking home from University and there were some people handing out brochures about God. I didn't take one, so I don't know specifically what religion they were, but it's just really annoying. Especially since a lot of students have to walk past there, unless they drove or live in the opposite direction. They were just in the way.

That said, I'm curious as to what the reaction would be if I started handing out brochures on atheism. It still seems to be the more taboo belief with the general public, maybe I'd be surprised but I feel like there would be a few more angry reactions than the religious groups get.

Although, I suppose in a very rare case I could maybe convert a believer. I believed in God once, just because I was raised by my mother, who also believes in God. Once I got old enough to understand it isn't fact, and look at the situation for myself, I "converted" to atheism. So I suppose if I just presented the arguments that compelled me to become an atheist there's a tiny chance I might convince someone who simply hadn't though on the matter much yet. But yeah, I don't feel any inclination too anyway, unless they start telling me how right they are and that I'm going to hell.

Not until I make up my own mind at least. I'm an agnostic so I can't very well change someone's mind if I can't make up my own.

Dude, I could have sworn that I posted on this thread about 2 hours ago. Deja Vu.

No, I don't think you can convert most religious folk. If people want to believe something, then they will, no matter what.

Please don't confuse the majority of us for the Westboro Baptist Church. Yes, we'd like to spread God's word and have everyone believe in Jesus Christ, but most reasonable people won't force you to. I'm truly sorry if some people have given you the wrong impression.

No one deserves to know what I know.

Not the Athiests, Christians, Jews, Muslims, HIndus, and any other subsect or subsidiary in between...

Well, maybe Buddhists because they're so cool.

But yeah, I'm of the belief (har har har) that faith and spirituality is 100% personal, so conversion is moot. The only percs that come with conversion is communal outings and going to a public church.

Westboro Baptist? I'm pretty sure he was talking about my future mother in-law....I hate going to restaurants with her, either she is saying the rapture is coming or WWIII is going to be fought on our doorsteps....She's bonkers.

On topic no I dont believe a person can convert someone, but I do believe people can change their own beliefs. I welcome all spiritual beliefs as long as they stick to the pure "live a good life, and treat people nice" teaching, and leave out the conversion or extremism.

I have a saying:

"The empty cans rattle the loudest".

I think that reasoned discourse can have something in the ways of conversion. I've actually had some success with it myself. (I'm Roman Catholic, btw)

If one thinks that simply shouting someone down and trying to bend them to their faith viewpoint will make them convert, are they any better than those Muslim fanatics who simply try to enforce their will on those around them? In the end, to convert someone, you literally need to change the way they see the world and themselves. The best way you can do that is to make them discover it for themselves.

Telling everyone you're right, is just as bad as everyone telling you you're wrong.

No ones business but yours.

No. People already hold their beliefs, and no amount of argument, especially on the internet, is going to change them.

That being said, I've never understood why people feel the need to force their beliefs on others. I personally couldn't care less how many people believe the same things as me, it's up to them what they want to believe in. But if someone engages me in debate, then I will gladly answer the call and use all the knowledge at my disposal to counter their arguments.

Really, there are two different scenarios that need separating. The first is when people pretend to have a serious discussion but instead use it as an attempt to shove their beliefs onto others, without maintaining any semblance of a rerasonable discussion. The second is a genuine discussion about a given belief, wherein (hopefully) both sides are open-minded and willing to change their beliefs if given a reason that is compelling enough. Sadly, the second type is extremely rare, which leaves us, in most cases, with the first scenario. In that case, no, people will not change their beliefs, because the purpose of their involvement is to 'convert' others, not to listen to rational debate.

"Do you think you can convert a believer?"
Yes, but it heavily depends on right accessories. 2x4, fire, sword and such...
