Title says it all. Whether in a FPS or cover based shooter, do you use aim assist? I ask this because recently I got into Battlefield 4, and after a few dozen matches of getting absolutely rekt, I asked around a couple of YouTube videos, and I found out that majority of BF players use aim assist. I had never used aim assist before, but I eventually caved in and turned it on. I've always thought that aim assist was dirty, and I assumed that no else used it too. I wish I didn't have to use it, but I'm no MLG pro, and going up against real people who are using it is suicidal.

So what do you guys think? If you do use, do you feel bad about it? If you don't, how do you do online?

Note: Auto aim doesn't count, such as GTA or RDR.

I was also under the impression that aim assist was considered "dirty" and something that was only needed/used on consoles.
I suppose I shouldn't be surprised though, considering that a lot of games today won't let you take cover by yourself, or jump/climb when you want, or attack how/when you want..

I guess I prefer the more oldschool style that didn't have to look "good/cinematic" but put more control in your hands.

If I'm using a controller and it's single player (I suck at shooters with a controller as I'm use to using a mouse) I might. Otherwise no.

How do I do on-line? decent. I kill more than I get killed at least but I'm only a casual player with mutiplayer shooters and usually do random matches. I would get eaten in ranked.

Unfortunately it's a staple on console. Actually aiming with a stick with no aim assist is deemed too difficult by developers/publishers so everyone gets their own aimbot lite. I guess it's easier to more broadly reach the casual audience if you let the game almost aim for them (I'm REALLY trying not to be condescending here I promise).
Fortunately it's mostly non-existent on PC, and when people do use it they get murdered anyway (I'm trying, failing, but I'm trying at least).

There is an option for aim assist in a PC multiplayer egoshooter?
Isn't that stuff called an aimbot and something that gets you banned?

I have never used aim assist (to my knowledge) on a PC...

On consoles, sure. I've used it a lot.

Though at times I've gotten annoyed with it and turned it off, because it's behaviour while helpful in hitting a target, was unhelpful in other ways.

For instance, way back in the days of Goldeneye and Perfect Dark, Aim assist was standard already, but the aiming point was the centre of the chest. (Which is indeed what you'd do in reality).

However, the game mechanics mean that a single (or maybe 2) headshots can take down enemies, while you'd need 3-6 (or more) body shots to do the same.

On top of that you could effectively 'stun' and enemy by shooting their arms.

Point being, while aim assist makes it easier to hit a target, it makes it harder to hit it with any precision.

And since you kind of need to be hitting headshots most of the time on the harder difficulties, in the end aim assist just ends up making life harder rather than easier.

But anyway, sure. There's a reason console shooters have it.
But I've never seen, nor desired to use it on PC.

On consoles it could go either way depending on how aim assist works, and what I'm doing...

No, because I want to earn my success using my own skill, or fail because of my own lack of skill. The majority of games I play are on PC, with a mouse.

How do I do online? Well I'm not an uber-pro but I can hold my own. I've got the achievements for surviving over half of Killing Floor's maps on Hell on Earth and I've survived all of Left 4 Dead 1&2's campaigns on Expert. I know those are co-op vs AI, but on those top difficulties you're not winning with a bad player on the team.

I just use whatever is default. I'm usualy a PC gamer so I was quite suprised when I started playing destiny, I would aim at somone in the distance then a guy would come round a corner and the crosshair would start following him instead of the guy I was aiming at lol

I don't like it. It messes up my aim because it starts moving the cross-hairs without my permission. I don't have a problem with others using it, it's just not for me.

Apparently I am the ONLY guy who voted yes. Wow.

Well, I do, because I like to use a controller and I'm a busy guy who doesn't want to spend 15 hours aiming a perfect head shot when "close enough" will do for me. I am aware that I am probably unable to beat any of you in a game of CS, but I also don't particular care either.

I already play games on the Hardest difficulty, and if I need to aim, I find Aim Assist for things like sniper rifles is already turned off, so I'm not missing anything that I care about.

I admit it; I am a scrub.

I am also in the "I see why it's necessary on console, but on PC that's called aimbotting and I don't do that" camp.

I disable it whenever I can, same with any sticky reticule options. I'm a decent enough player to land hits without them, and I hate the weird felling of aiming in one spot, and having it shoot elsewhere.

Not on PC.

I would on console, but I generally don't play shooters on console and never multiplayer shooters.

Console scrub here.

I keep it on. There were times back in CoD BlOps where I TRIED to play it without autoaim, which as a sniper, will fuck you over more often than it will help you. But that was also during a time in Blops history where they were tweaking the controls every other week, and every time they did, I had to get used to sniping again, and said fuck it and put aim assist back on. And then there were times in Blops where the aim assist is so god damn strong, that I can't actually MOVE my aiming reticule off of a moving target if he moves past another one.

In single player games, I'll turn it off if I notice an option, because it's less important there, but consoles, no. Not anymore. I haven't played shooters online though with any sort of regularity for years though, been mostly CoD/BF free the last while, with Titanfall being the only other shooter I spent a lot of time with in the last year. Picked up BF Hardline though, and the aim assist that I've noticed is minor (while I've been sniping at least.) It has a weak pull so I've never had to shove my stick in the opposite direction if I changed my mind on if I want to try shooting that person or not, unlike CoD which just decides, "Oh, you wanna look at this guy? LET ME HELP YOU WITH THAT *takes controller out of your hands*"

I doubt I'll ever take aim assist off as long as I'm on a console, because of that very reason. Everyone on a console will have aim assist on in a shooter, not gonna deny myself an advantage that the game itself is giving me and everyone else, no matter how small it is.

As for my overall preformance in shooters? Meh, usually changes depending on my focus for the game/match. I love sniping, so in general, I try to stay away from the action while looking for my shots. I'd put myself in the "average" category, maybe slightly above average when I found my ideal class setup.

Nope, on console most FPS have aim assist. On PC it's somewhat rarer, but you can find it usually on singleplayer focused games, like Far Cry 3. Aim assist isn't quite as unfair as aimbots, they only nudge you a bit towards your enemy. Sometimes it's unnoticeable, sometimes it can follow enemies through walls.

On PC, no, because I'm good enough with a mouse to not need it.

On console, I can't turn it on fast enough. It is hard enough to aim with an analog stick, let alone get decent accuracy. Now, generally I do set it on as weak of an aim assist as the game will allow, but even the minor difference between barely any assisting and none at all can make a huge difference in how enjoyable the game is. Too much aim assist, though, just feels like the game is playing itself, and that's no fun either.

The end result is that my accuracy is about even regardless of whether I'm playing on PC or console, which, to me, is perfect.

Erm...we've had that options for ages. Here is 1999

OK, true, that's not the initial version of HL, however, I assure you - the option was there as well. I just couldn't find a screenshot of this screen from the previous version, so I downloaded it on Steam and screencapped that.

Oh aim assists weren't just considered dirty, you would get banned for that shit. But now that console FPS is the biggest market it's hard to find a shooter without one, need to triple check settings every time to see what sort of nonsense the game is doing in the background.

I'm not against them as a handicap option for players who don't want to make an effort, but you absolutely need to make the distinction in competitive games.
To me there is a world of difference when I make that critical move or the game just does it on it's own.
