Hey there guys, I just wanted to address something I've been noticing a lot lately...
Hair gel. I hate it.

I find it disgusting. It plasters your hair into little sticky, stiff strings that stick to your scalp or lay on top. It looks especially bad with medium to longish hair, where it just makes it look greasy and dirty. It looks very unattractive. I cannot understand why people use it.

Making hair look nice is all about the cut. Get a decent cut, make sure you wash it and condition it frequently (every couple of days in my case, I exercise a lot), and straighten it if it's your style. You don't have to shape it with this chemical goop every morning.

I have not met a single girl who likes it when guys wear hair gel. One girl even told me it makes guys look like tossers.

Now, having said this, I went through a bout of wearing hair gel for a couple of months. Now I can't stand the stuff. It makes me shudder when I have to look at the back of some guy's greasy, sticky head every morning on the bus. It doesn't exactly feel nice either! Do you want a girl to have to wipe her hand off if she plays with your hair? Not cool.

Anyways, I just want to hear some reasons or opinions.
How do you feel about hair gel? If you DO use it, why?

I personally don't find any need for it. Maybe I'm just one of the lucky ones...

EDIT:
And yeah, for some guys with short hair it actually looks pretty cool.

And also, I was going to put a /product after the gel, but I thought I would just clump it all under one big banner. My opinion (in bold there for the idiots) entails all hair products in general...

No... Just no...
I have been tought since childhood that real men has short, trimmed hair, hence no need for using that shit...

I just laugh at guys that use it... And i will laugh at them in 30 years as well, when they have all lost their hair due to the nasty stuff they put in it...

I have long hair but still don't see the need for hair gel. Maybe because I never really cared about how I look even since primary school.

Are you just talking about just gel or hair products in general?

I use a dabble of Fudge to give it some texture, and the best bit is that it also smells like fucking caramel !, not that I've noticed that much...

And what you're describing sounds like they're wiping buckets of the stuff in.

Even then it depends on the style. Yeah, you can use pomade to slick hair back into a pompadour, but you can also use just a little bit to make it a shinier if you have naturally dull hair. Anyone who thinks a pompadour is unattractive is probably in the minority. The pompadour is considered one of the "classic" men's hair styles.

It's about doing it right. I use various gels, pomades and creams on occasion. Never gotten anything but compliments on it in my adult life.

When my curls are free they actually STING me in the eye.
They're ALIVE, and they HATE me. I have to kill my curly hair, or at least stun it for a short time.

Tell me about it. Although I don't think mine are as violent as yours. They just like to piss me off, constantly poke me in my ear. Mousse satiates them for a day though, thankfully.

I use the tiniest dab just on my bangs because I'd rather have them up and to the side than down and potentially in my eyes. That said I really don't have any other need for it because my hair is naturally bendy/ easily shaped but there are times if I'm sweaty or doing a lot my hair will just soak up all that moisture from my head and just hang down so unless I have access to a dryer or a towel, I'd rather just take a little bit on a finger or two and run it quick through my hair to give it some life.

Gel? Not exactly. But a little bit of wax seems to work, or some of the putty things. My hair looks all flat and dead if I don't do anything with it, regardless if how I get it cut (it made a hairdresser cry...)

Provided you don't just scoop a huge amount out and hurl it at your head, it shouldn't look/feel greasy at all. Not that this will ever stop people from doing the above...

I've got long, very thick hair, so when I use hair gel I need lots of it to really work, and then it just feels very awkward and I feel unclean instead of stylish. Also,
this

is way more awesome :p Just need to find those glasses somewhere :D

I usually rock the pompadour, so yes, I have to use product usually being Murray's Pomade. However, I now have a mohawk and need to use both hairspray and wax. In general, I do use a lot of hair product, but not gel.

I think OP was trying to allude to the "Jersey Shore" style of hair which isn't really because of gel, but more of douche.

Use it everyday. Not sure why you absolutely hate it. Many a girl has played with my hair ( translated one) and it's not sticky. That only happens if you use too much. You barely need any, but a lot of people over use it.

Maybe it's location, but most guys I know either have long shaggy hair or gelled. And I haven't met any girl who hates gel. Quite a common style round these parts.

Pretty much this.

Though I rarely use gel. I tend to more rely on a medium cut and being conservative when using shampoo so my hair doesn't turn into fluff. God I hate it when my hair's fluffy. And shampoo makes my scalp dry so I usually only use a dab or two when I'm washing my hair.
