In the wake of the recent tsunami that destroyed homes and lives in Samoa, I'm looking at doing some volunteer work with my local Red Cross branch. Any other Escapists out there do volunteer work?

I give to whatever charities sound good and seek me out. You should have an option for the people who don't give back.

Added the "no" option. I guess I should have phrased the question better. I assumed uninterested people wouldn't even bother with the thread.

I work for St John Ambulance which is similar to, but much less appreciated than, the Red Cross. They also do first aid at local and big events, e.g. school fetes, Live 8, etc.

My school practically MADE me, they gave us a big speech that doing A levels aren't enough, you HAVE to have a part-time job, HAVE to do a sport, and you HAVE to volunteer somewhere. And preferably play an instrument. Still working on the job, but otherwise sorted. I chose to volunteer at a hospital on the NHS. You actually get marked down if you don't volunteer somewhere, and 'frowned upon' if you don't do the other stuff.

The main reason they're making us do all this is because of how competitive uni's are, which I can understand. However, considering how much they've increased how much it costs to go to uni, I can't help but wonder if I'll even be able to afford it anyway. Not to mention the fact that it's very likely Tory's are getting in soon, and they hate poor people.

*Sigh* :(

You should also put down volunteering for the emergency services, or key organisations (Fire, Police, Ambulance, Army etc.). In the UK, there's the Territorial Army, Police Special Constabulary, voluntary Paramedice, and I do believe that there are several voluntary firefighters about too.

I do if I feel like it and the people there are not dicks, and if they are i politly say its not going to work and leave, and I hate it when someone asks for people to help then doesnt do a damn thing themselves and wants you there at a set point every week if its not that big of a thing

Well my option isn't their.

I volunteer on a Preserved railway near where i live. I only donate money to Military funds or the RNLI (Life Guards to the Americans) or the Air Ambulance as they receieve no money from the goverment.

I worked on the Board of Directors for the National Youth Rights Association, a non-profit based in D.C., and I frequently help out serving food and moving funiture at Ginny's Pantry, which is kind of like a Salvation Army type store without all the greed that also serves and gives out food to low income families and people without homes.

My work has been getting in the way lately, so I haven't been as active, but I made up for it by giving blood a couple of times, which is hell for me because I can't stand needles or IV's.

Aye, I do.

Myself and some good friends run a workshop every Saturday for a few hours designed to help young rock musicians. It's really fantastic, and we get a huge amount of visitors. We do get paid, but only enough to break even.
