So, there you go. This poll was brought forward out of a discussion I was having a while back on a poll about pronunciation and since poor spelling online is often a hot topic in the literary world, I was wondering what the Escapist community's thoughts were on the subject. Personally, although I feel good spelling makes your post look more professional, I like the way that chat shorthand has developed in way that shows the dynamic nature of language in order to make it more efficient and thereby shaping it into new forms (i.e. lol, sup, irl).
Some mistakes like saying "it's definition" instead of "its definition" can't be explained away like that though and I'm kind of disappointed when I see that those kind of things don't come naturally to some people.
So fellow Escapist users, what are your thoughts on this?

Note: This is only about spelling mind. This subject isn't even as broad as whether or not paragraphs are used, let alone what style is being applied.

Edit: it's supposed to be "not using your punctuation correctly"; I just knew something ironic like this would come back to bite me [ooh, didn't know I could change that]. >.>

(Yay, first poll.)

Noep, bad speling dusnt bother me won bit.

In all seriousness, it doesn't, but knowing that some of the people that do use incorrect spelling on the internet think that it's the right spelling is kind of a bad thought.

Yes. It really, really annoys me. Checking your own posts isn't that hard to do, and it makes it much easier for the rest of us to understand what you're trying to say. But spelling doesn't bug me as much as punctuation. If I tried to type an entire post that neglected to use any commas or periods or anything and expected you to understand it at a glance that would be really hard and unfair we would be unable to tell what you are saying and it just adds unnecessary confusion to an otherwise easy post so basically what I am saying is use proper spelling and whatnot it isn't that hard and more people will take you seriously and actually read to the end of you post and you would be a better person for it.

Well, everyone makes mistakes, but I think that people should at least TRY to use proper spelling and punctuation. It helps to give your opinions an air of respectability, and makes things easier to understand. Also, there are certain different levels; mixing up there and they're is just plain stupid, but accidentaly misspelling onomatopoeia isn't.

I kind of have to pick you up on this and I feel that irony is pretty much what is going to drive this thread. But because you fell into the punctuation catagory. I felt I should let you know that your last sentence should be split into 2. Don't hold it against you or anything, just thought it was funny. :p

(Uh-Oh 13th post. *holds on to horseshoe* Not a triskaidekaphobic or anything. >.>)

It doesn't bother me when it's a genuine mistake...but when someone REPEATEDLY misspells a word then it gets annoying.

It depends, if some one makes one or two spelling mistakes, I don't care, people make mistakes. When the poor spelling is so bad you have to read it more than once, then it's sort of irritating. In both cases I just move one with out comment. The only time I really comment on spelling is when the person is insulting me, while making numerous spelling mistakes, because that's hilarious.

I think what annoys me the most is people trying to sound smart by using 'big words' and then using the wrong ones. I can't think of an example right now, but I know I've seen it enough to be noticable.

and Safari, too.

Bad grammar isn't much of a problem for me but bad spelling really does annoy me a lot. I mean basic words that people should have learnt in grade 2...

Nonetheless, I chose the first option. Because we all know everything sounds better in the Queen's English.

Seriously! Why do people still misspell half their words? THERE ARE GIANT, EVIL, RED SQUIGGLIES UNDER THEM! THEY ARE MADDENING! Ignoring spell-check is only OK if you are writing the word "squigglies."

I find it quite hilarious that you start off this poll with 2 misspellings.

A good bit, yes. Especially today when every misspelled word is redlined for you and is just a right-click away from being right. I'm not massively anal about it, I can put up with a few typos, but if it's something that I have to slow down and read more than once, then it's not worth it.

Also, and this may just be a personal quirk, people who replace the letter 'i' with a 'y' for no good reason drive me bananas. One of my girlfriends best friends does it constantly.

when i type on a forum i usually type as fast as i can and usually use abbreviations and texting lingo, because i want to get my post done as fast as i can. just like online gaming and when people QQ yes QQ about poor spelling and grammar i really dont see the big deal. they obviously got the point of what you were trying to saying get on with the game.
example
game league of legends and heroes of newerth grammer nazi utopia
don't complain about horrible grammer and fast typing mistakes when i just saved your beehind from a humiliating gank

Fair enough. I said this thread would be riddled with irony, and lo and behold, ey? :p
It's a good thing that about half the people voting up to now are fine with it. The downside is that about a fifth also seem to want to shoot me. :(
Incidentally, there are 3 spelling mistakes; 2 in one word.

(Yay, 14th post or 15th post? There goes that idea down the drain already. >.>)

See, I made a thread about this a while back where it was a game. I typed an entire paragraph with typos, words used incorrectly, and just plain silliness, about people not knowing how to spell and use grammar correctly. At the end of it, I asked people to to count how many they could find and then post it (It was somewhere around 47 mistakes I think). You know what I got?
A bunch of people yelling at me, saying I was being a jerk. My favorite was, "Sniper Team 4, go crawl back under the rock you came from."

On Topic: Yes, using the English language incorrectly drives me nuts. I can't count the number of times I've had to resist posting in a thread simply to tell the person that the word they are looking for is "theories" and not "theory's" or some other thing like that. I understand that many people on this website are not from the U.S., but many of these mistakes are made by people who should not be making them. It's baffling and annoying at the same time.

When it reeks of laziness, yes, it's annoying. It's ok to spell "squirrel" incorrectly, but it's unacceptable to misspell "apple."

A minor pet peeve of mine is when people type "payed" when they mean "paid." Spell check doesn't pick this up, so I see this mistake everywhere
