I'm going to see Guardians of the Galaxy tomorrow at the earliest showing I can find. Thing is, I'm not sure if I should watch the 3D version or not. Is it worth it? Lots of the time, I find that even when the 3D is cool, the movie doesn't use it to improve the storytelling. It's like giving you a free chocolate cupcake with your movie ticket -- it improves the experience as a whole, but it doesn't make the movie itself better.

So what's your opinion?

I saw it in 3D today. I'm not sure it improved the storytelling much but it was well done, not particularly disconcerting and helped highlight certain elements in shot which helped draw the eye.

I'm not a big fan of 3D but I thought was ok and I wouldn't let it put you off your preferred showing unless you have problems watching films in 3D.

(I know that I made a previous thread about this, but the forum ate my poll and I need that poll to be sure to get spoiler-free answers.)

I'm not going to vote, because I haven't actually seen it yet. That said, I'll be skipping the 3D.

Generally speaking I can't stand 3D. The only real exception to the rule was Avatar. Everything else I've seen in 3D since then has either been a shitty post conversion job or simply had no idea what to do with the gimmick.

The day I kinda swore I wouldn't see another movie in 3D was when I went with some friends to see the first Thor. The 3D in Thor was complete and utter garbage, sometimes being used for nothing but product placement. Like that scene where the characters are talking in Natalie Portman's kitchen, and the only thing in the room that's 3D is a strategically placed box of Kashi Go Lean Crunch cereal. Pfft.

2 things. First I saw it today and it is easily the 2nd best MCU movie ever (first being The Avengers). Second, while I did not see it in 3D I have a friend who works for the cinema and as such he and some other collegues watched it last night before it was released to the public and he has now seen it in both 3D and 2D and he says that after about 5 mins you don't notice the 3D at all and it adds nothing so take from that what you will.

No, it doesn't. There're a few moments where they're clearly trying to sell the 3D to you - like when a lizard creature tosses another lizard creature into the air (and the audience) before gulping it - and other gimmicky stuff like that. The beginning is pretty low-key and you'll forget about the 3D instantly, only to be reminded of it when something gimmicky happens every now and then. I'd skip it in your place.

I saw it in 3D at a preview, and while it didn't actively annoy me like it did in Winter Soldier's opening sequence, I can't say it added anything to the experience. It doesn't detract from it either, but after about 10 minutes you forget you're even watching a 3D movie - just like the vast majority of 3D movies.

I'll be seeing it again, but I'm going to go for a 2D screening next time.

No, 3d is a gimmick that makes all movies darker and detracts from the experience.

2nd ? that's pretty bold :) how would you rate it against Iron Man ?

also how is Karen in it ?
I love Iron Man and I love RDJ as Tony Stark and he is still my favorite character in the MCU but as a complete movie GotG has all three Iron Man movies beat IMO. I will say however that Rocket is now number 2 in my favorite MCU characters and Groot, Star lord and Drax are all tied for 3rd place.

As for Karen, she did not have a massive part with many lines but her accent was good and she was really good in her action scenes.

3D just looks a bit funny. I have 20/20 vision and it still plays havoc with my eyes

I cant say anything about guardians but most 3D just doesnt do it for me. Plus 3D is mega expensive compared to 2D

I noticed each main character gets a chance to be funny except the resident Five-Man Band can only be sexy and/or tough.

Not true. Things converted into 3D in post tend to get muddied up, but if you shoot something in 3D in the first place it looks fine.

Unfortunately the shitey method that makes everything look terrible is by far the cheaper of the two, so most 3D films use it...

OT:
I'll be seeing it in 3d anyway seeing as I don't get the headaches that other people complain of, and I found I enjoyed previous Marvel films in 3D.

Thanks for this thread. I was considering the decision myself when I see it tomorrow.

Looks like it's 2D for me.

BTW, as for 2D vs 3D, the last 3D movie I was was How to Train Your Dragon 2, and the 3D was absolutely worth it.

It doesn't enhance the movie but it 'can' be a cool gimmick if done right, which I haven't seen for awhile. It's even worse when they remake classic films with it, blurring the background while sharpening the models upfront.

Did you happen to capture The Hobbit films in 3D? I'm also of the opinion that Avatar was the only film to do 3D well. But The Hobbit films look fucking amazing in 3D, especially all the sweeping shot of mountains, long fields, etc. Depth of field is what it's all about in 3D, not shit popping out of the screen. Gravity also aparently did it well, but I never saw it in 3D, something I completely regret since everyone I know who saw it was all "Dude, this movie's 3D was totally for people like you."

Also....3D Sandra Bullocks legs....glorious.

Haven't seen it yet but personally, I find 3D to actually make the movie more immersive. Sure there's the occasions where there's a specific shot made in such a way so that they can basically yell "look, 3D!" at you, and while I do find those distracting, they're generally uncommon.

At first I only considered 3D a gimmick, but now, after seeing many movies using it, I find that it really does enhance my viewing experience. It's just annoying having to wear the 3D glasses over top of my normal ones.
