I'm always thought that exploiting and using glitches to your advantage doesnt nessacarilly count as cheating, as opposed to acual cheating. so using the dupe thing in oblivion or something like that or glitches in cod2, or the xp glitch in fallout 3? does using these gap in the game count as cheating?

If the glitch gives you some advantage that would otherwise be hard or impossible to get, then yes: it is cheating

Varies.

On single player games, no, it's fine to exploit the designer's shortcomings.

In local multiplayer, grey area, usually ok because the other people playing will either pick up on it or kick you off.

In online multiplayer, very very bad. The servers I play you will get banned for using exploits repeatedly. You get a warning first, but it's gaining an unfair advantage through methods the other team can't counter.

Sometimes people can mistake skill for exploits though, TF2 in particular has lots of places you 'shouldn't' be able to reach but can if you're skilled with your jumping. but clipping out of the map or through walls is very very bad.

This is exactly true, I reckon. Single player it's not cheating, and so I answered 'No' in the poll. Online, you shouldn't glitch. However, it does depend on the situation, it's much better to look at each case seperately, in my opinion.

Yes, but its not exactly bad if you use it once or twice half-accidentally, thats just funny when you see your character mysteriously warp behind an enemy melee attack before clobbering him with your own. However, deliberate and repeated exploitation of a game-breaking glitch is when this moves into "stop having fun guys" territory.

It really depends, look a Gunz: The duel. The unique gameplay has come from people glitching the game. So yeah I think it can be cheating, but it can also can create new and interesting game play.

It is cheating, always. No question. Is it OK is when it varies. Single player, cheat all you want, your game. Multiplayer in a legit match, not at all. Mucking around with friends is fine though, long as its known your not really playing for score.

A glitch is an exploit to help you, therefore tis cheating.
Not always. While it is true most glitches help you some hinder you. A glitch is when the player does something the developer did not anticipate. And sometimes it's hard to determine if something was a glitch or intentional. L4D is prime example of this. It's hard to tell if Instant Kill Spots were intentional or glitched. But things like Power Shooting and Ghost Clawing are clearly glitches. (And very fucking annoying too)! And spots like the gap between the open barn door on Survival Mode kill you instantly. So rather or not is it's cheating is open to interpretation. In some ways it can be a different and sometimes fun way to play.

It really depends whether or not you know the glitch is there, then you choose to exploit it, or if you just stumble across it by accident.

No you just exploit something which was accidentally put in the game. Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, B, A, Start (no you don't get something for telling me from what game this cheat is since it's probably the most famous cheat ever) is a cheat. Going through a wall in Portal n order to beat the game in a few minutes is a glitch.
