You know, the man who makes a show out of rants. His metaphor-filled warp-speed reviews (if you can call them that) roast through nearly every game they reach. From big-budget overhyped shooters to long-running and weird JRPGs the online-hating player has injured the pride of many a developer. But people take him seriously, and that is a surprising and sort of unnerving thing. In the comment threads (one you get past all of the thinly-masked first posts) there are basically three types of comments. There are those who, overtaken by fanboyism, either 'agree with his reasoning' or try to show him how he's wrong about their most loved/hated series. There are also those who merely enjoy the comedy, and waste good pixels quoting dialogue because they think it will be funnier the second time and typed out. But the last kind, and the one most startling, are those that go something like this:

"Wow, I'm glad I watched I was almost going to buy the game lalz :D"

This got me thinking. I love Zero Punctuation as much as the next guy does, but I would never have thought that his 'opinions' are taken seriously! People buying with his list must have pretty small libraries...

So, what about you guys? Does this influence your opinions?

EDIT: I seem to have some sort of phantom, invisible poll here. sorry.

No, he's a satirist.

I mean, I didn't start eating babies after I read A Modest Proposal.

Not really. No.

He's entertaining and I like the show. But it's obvious his schtick is to be negative and crticize the games. I don't trust most reviews anyways. But I take Yahtzee for what he's worth. An entertaining and comical version of game reviews. And while its obvious he knows his stuff, I don't really base purchases too much if it.

Although don't really base it of reviews too much anyways. The only things I look for is a general consensus (if they all say it's a terrible, broken disaster) or if the same complaints keep getting mentioned. But all in all it's based on what I see from the gameplay and videos on it.

...I see this topic so much, we get it.....what, every week?

No yahtzee has nothing to do with the games a buy. If he does you're an idiot.

No, because he is not a reviewer in my mind. He just takes a game and rags on it for 5 minutes.

It's funny. But it doesn't affect my game purchases in any way.

I watch his videos because they're funny and he occasionally raises interesting points. He hates 95% of games, so if he says a game sucks I take it with a lot of salt.

If he says a game's good, though, I definitely check it out.

No he does not. In fact i will go on point as saying i do not let any reviewer or satirical writer such as Yahtzee affect my game purchases.

if he recommends it I'll usually go check the game out, but not doing more research on a game that he gives a bad review is just sheepish.

I find him to be fairly accurate with his reviews, especially when I play a game in a bad mood. I wouldn't say however that he's turned me away from a game purchase. I pretty much handle that whole thing myself. I really wish I'd had a chance to show my friend his review of Crackdown 2 before he bought it though.

Because he puts things down so much, when he recommends something, I definately check it out. I bought Psychonauts, Silent Hill 2, Prince of Persia and Shadow of Colossus largely on his recommendation (a couple others as well thinking about it). And I have enjoyed these games immensely.
On the other hand, I have enjoyed games that he has put down as well, so I won't let him disuade me too much when thinking about buying a game.

Somewhat. I have a number of reviewers that I check when I am interested in a game, and he is one of them. I only use him as a last resort, however, if the other reviewers have not been consistent with their reviews of the game. I also take his reviews with massive amounts of salt. He's just another guy I check to see what he thinks of a game and he never really acts as the decision maker.

Site rules, you're not supposed to talk directly of the people in the videos, only of the content they show. Just a heads up

But yeah, no... He bashed Arkham Asylum just because he's not known for being nice to games... That should give you a heads up

He's pretty accurate with a lot of things, I've found, but if I'm really, truly interested in a game I will have done enough meticulous research beforehand to justify going out and buying it, regardless of what the dear Brit has to say. Then as I play, I'll be on the lookout for some of the criticisms he made and see whether they match up.
I love watching ZP videos, but Yahtzee's opinions will never be quite enough to sway me from handing over $100 for my highly anticipated new release if I really, really want it.

...alternatively, any game he reviews that I think is shite already will be received with a giggle and a "This confirms my beliefs, it does"

No, even though he says a game is crap (like 99% of the time), i still find many of them extremely enjoyable. for example, he rants on Halo, Cod, Fable and Assassins creed, but those are still some of the best games i have ever played. i did in fact purchase Psychonauts based on his review and a friends recommendation, and i really enjoyed the humor and gameplay in it.
I pretty much watch Zero Punctuation every wedensday because Yahtzee is a great man with alot of great humor, and he hits my humor mark spot on. Even when he rants on my favorite games i still laugh because what he says is true, but its not always a problem.

Not really. If he seems to like a game, I may take another look at it if it wasn't one I was looking at, but he has never turned me away from a game purchase.

Only once, and that was Saints Row 2 which only made me want it more. Aside from that no.
