So, recently, my friend finally got me to watch this movie. She has been obsessed with it for the longest time and absolutely loves it but was never able to convince me or any of our other friends to watch it. Basically, I was over at her house and she just started playing it. Long story short, I watched it and really enjoyed it.

Opinions seem to be really torn about this movie though. It seems some people absolutely loved it and others hated it. If you've seen it, where do you stand?

If you don't know what Donnie Darko is, it's a psychological thriller where main character Donnie has schizophrenia. He keeps getting visions of a demented bunny named Frank, who slowly leads him into what the "dark side" of what life is really like and also tells him "when the world will end," which he constantly brings up. I can't really say too much without giving away the whole mind-screw ending.
I know the whole rabbit thing sounds weird but it really does make sense eventually.

There was also a sequel released last year called S. Darko. My friend also had it though she didn't remember it very well. We started to watch it and in short, we both hated it and only made it roughly halfway before shutting it off.

So anyways. Have you seen Donnie Darko? What did you think of it?

EDIT: For those of you who like the movie, beware. There are rumors that a third one is in production...

I saw it because a friend of my Dad's recommended it to him. I've seen it 5+ times now and I've seen both the normal and Directors Cut versions. It's one of my top most favorite movies and I love it completely. It may be a hit and miss movie, but it's the kind of movie that everyone should at least see once in their life.

And about the squeal, I simply refuse to watch that. The first was far too good and a sequel is completely unneeded. I prefer to keep my love of this movie unsoiled.

I absolutely loved it. It was very creepy, well written, and had a very original plot. Also, I heard the same thing about 'S. Darko', about how the story is just nonsensical, and how it's full of plot holes.

The only friend of mine who's seen it loves it, but he doesn't have especially great taste in movies... I'll just have to get it someday.

It was a decent movie with a nice twist, but I found the conclusion of the story kinda retarded (in pretty much the exact same way I found The Butterfly Effect's ending retarded). I certainly didn't hate it, but I do think it's extremely overrated by a certain kind of people...

When I first watched it, all I thought was "What the hell", but then I unraveled the whole story/plot, and it made sense, all I could think of was how good of a movie it was.

Good Plan S.Darko is the first film but with his sister instead

I liked it. Didn't do to well with the masses though I hear, has more of a cult following.

The plot was a tad confusing the first time round, it took one or two more views to get everything.

It was a very interesting movie. Not the best, but definitely know why it would have gotten its cult following. The movie was atmospheric and you can relate to it if you saw it in high school. Looking at it the director has lots of potential to make more movies, perhaps in a similar vein.
Over-rated by the youth, who think it is the next coming in revolutionising cinema. Under-rated by seniors because there is a depth to the movie that drives it into interest. Thus, it does not get "must-see" from me, but certainly one that would be worth checking out out of interest or if you want something that is out of the Hollywood mainframe. Plus, it gave us Jake Gyllenhall.

I never really understood why everyone is so confused about the ending...

It seems pretty straightforward. The whole movie, Donnie was supposed to die when the plane crashed, and because of Frank, he didn't. It was pretty much the inverse of "It's a Wonderful Life". Rather than being about what would have happened if the protagonist had never been born, it was about what would have happened if he never died. Sort of like an alternate reality that he got to experience firsthand.

Loved it, BTW. Great thinking movie.

Aside from all the story crap, it's worth watching for the good performances given by pretty much all the cast. special mention goes to Patrick Swazye for the best role I'd seen him in since Point Break. I didn't see the Directors Cut but I was warned away from it heavily by a lot of fans. I heard it gives too much away.

To clarify mine, I haven't seen the whole thing but what i did see was really weird and my friends at school have ruined the entire thing for me.

I have had the DVD of Donnie Darko for about six years now. I haven't seen it yet. The movie just doesn't seem interesting to me. Sure, if I watch it, I can get into it, but I think i would still feel the same way about it, if only see it in a slightly more positive attitude. It's just one of those movies I can't bother myself to come around and watch it.

Like The Godfather.

for some reason hipsters think its the greatest movie ever made, along with Garden State. Honestly i never saw what was so great about the movie.

EDIT: Pretentious cunts. They embody the same people they loathe, preps. Both groups are pricks and pretentious cunts.

If by "gives to much away" you mean "adequately explains the story but still leaves intrigue" then yes, it does do that.

The fans are lying, the Directors Cut is vastly superior. They're trying to be cool by acting like they didn't need the Director's Cut to know what was going on.
