On your first play through what was your final ending?

Me? I had Anders joined me, Sebastian rage war against me, and sided with the well meaning, but stupid, Orsino.

I uh...pretty much helped the Mages the entire game(as I was a mage) and was the bestest buds with Anders up until the point he decided to blow the shit out of the Grand Cleric. I decided then he had to receive a knife in the back and opted help the Templars. Not that it fucking mattered since both sides are batshit insane.
This.

I really didn't like how the mages in Act 3 were handled. What with all of them turning into blood mages...

Also, I stabbed Anders in the back for being a terrorist. Although, the explosion was awesome.

Left Anders be in the first playthrough, though I barely controlled myself from killing him.

Always helped mages though, since I was one. I disliked Meredith since I first heard of her way back in the first year. All of Kirkwall was in need of a psychiatrist though.

So I felt like it was just me, Varric and Dog. Against the world. The completely bonkers world.

I did the same as Ghostwise, but by the time I had to choose once and for all who to side with, I was really kind of hoping for a "you're both morons, I'm done with this crap" option. Meredith and Orsino were both... really, really bad representatives for their sides. I mean, you have the templar who is completely ignorant of the corrupting influence of a lyrium idol (did she even NOTICE how loony Bartrand was when she bought it from him?), and then you have the mage who spends the whole game going "Blood magic is bad, not all mages use it!" and then IMMEDIATELY resorts to it once things look bad.

Hard to really feel justified in whichever side you choose. I wonder if that was what the writers were going for?

I was a mage and I chose to kill Anders and help the templars...why? Because every mage I had met in Kirkwall was a Blood magic lunatic that's why. Most of the templars were just trying to get on with it, outside Alrik(sp?) my character didn't see any evidence of abuse. Ander's killed an innocent old lady. Everyone in Kirkwall is nuts apart from Varric. I felt completely justified...bunch of loonies.

So I felt like it was just me, Varric and Dog. Against the world. The completely bonkers world.
glad to know I wasn't the only one.

I was a rogue Hawke, Bethany survived and was in the Circle, and I had been good friends with Anders up to that point and decided to make him join me to defend the mages.

See, I was just about to go make a thread about this, but I see someone beat me to it.

I'll be honest. Even in Awakening, I didn't like Anders. Yes he was funny, but he whined a bit too much for my tastes. In this game he was even worse. He would NOT accept the fact that some mages are simply evil and need to be watched. Did the Templars go too far in some cases? Yes. In some cases, were the Templars right? Yes. But in this idiot was too narrow minded to see anything but what he wanted to see. And what happens when a mage not controlled by Templars goes and murders your mother? "Hawke, your mother. I'm so sorry. I can't believe a mage would do that..." NO KIDDING! There's a reason there are safe guards.

Now that my rant is over, I'll answer the question. I sided with the mages because the Knight Commander had gone too far. If she had called for the execution of Anders and no one else, I would have sided with her. Even toward the end, Orsino was trying to be reasonable. "Lock us up, search the tower. I'll even help you. But recall the Rite of Annulment." Nope. Plus, after the fact, it was proven that she was insane. The mages were being more oppressed there than anywhere else. Now, when Orsino turned, I had no problem gutting him either. As for Anders, I swear if he wasn't the only person in the entire party who knew healing magic (what's up with that nonsense?), I would have killed him. Blow up the Templar hall, not the person trying to help. As it stood, I had him join me. Depending on how Dragon Age III plays out, I may end up killing him and keeping him dead. Terrorist.

That was the point, showing that the Templars were right in their main issue. When the chips are down, 95% of all mages will turn to blood magic and demons to save their asses.

OT: Despite the above fact, I still sided with the mages as it was clear that Meredith was batshit and unwilling to compromise AT ALL, plus I had to save my sister. Also I knifed Anders, he killed one of the people who was really trying to keep it from coming to bloodshed and he destroyed any hope of that happening. I know that was his intention, my problem is that he got me to help him do it >.>

Isabela also had a 'meh' attitude during the end fight from what I could tell. At least she didn't seem to take sides. I don't know for sure though, I did romance her so she probably just didn't care to do anything if my Hawke didn't.

People keep saying this, and I think there's a reason to it. I believe the reason everyone seems a bit more unhinged than they should be is because it's part of the story. If you find those notes from The Band of Three or something, it says that there's something odd about Kirkwall. The Veil is thinner than it should be, the city seems to be built to mimic magic runes, and there's evidence that a culture was there long before anyone else. Then there's the fact that you find the Lyrium Idol in a part of the Deep Roads close to Kirkwall. It's in a Thaig that no one recognizes, and what does the Idol do? Makes people holding it go nuts. Ten-to-one Kirkwall is built on some magic focus site, which is why everyone's off their rocker.
Or they're just insane. :)

I know what Anders did was extreme, but that's exactly what I love his decision for. It forced something, and it caused many deaths yes, but it broke the tension we all knew was building up to shitstorm levels. To an extent, I agree with what he said. Removing the only chance of compromise, because there really is no compromise. Everyone was so hesitant to take the first step, but Anders actually did it.

Not ideal circumstances but, hey, shit happens. I would have given Anders a pep talk if I could have, I don't think he was completely right or anything, but I admire his zeal in all of this. And Sebastian just confirmed himself a whiney prick who still knew only revenge.

Could be something there...there are a lot more mages around compared to the odd apostate from Ferelden.

But the thaig wasn't close. It was a week or two of walking. And Lyrium poisons and makes people go insane anyway. Or at least that's what people said in DA:O and when I heard about a lyrium idol I knew it was trouble.

But a lot of worlds seems to make its tenants/citizens/NPCs insane. Divine Divinity 2 had some genocidal people everyone cheered for...Baldur and NWN had its share of madmen and I won't even mention KotOR since that's established as having crazy people.

It seems they just thrive in fantasy land though those of Kirkwall were worse than most. It would be a nice twist if the Tevinter Imperium had done something to the city besides torturing people thus thinning the Veil.

if orsino had been a blood mage from the start i could have handled that but i think it was pretty stupid that he starts using it immediatly AFTER you just decimated several waves of templars and he says with you he thinks we could win it... i wish there was an option to slap all the stupid out of the mages... but i think you're right, the writers probably tried to make it so that both sides were in the wrong, so that it didnt matter who you sided with.

anyway i sided with the mages seeing as i was one, and i let anders live because i've been wanting to destroy the chantry since origins.. so good riddance.

I romanced Anders cause my Hawke liked the crazy, but then he blew up the chantry so I killed him for it. It really pissed me off how even though I was trying to fix things he goes behind my back and undoes everything!

First playthrough I romanced Anders and sided with the mages. Ran away with Anders. *sigh*
This time I'm killing all the mages, despite being a mage myself :)

Considering he was the healer in the team, I could not go with the decision I wanted. So I gave up on another attempt.

Sided with Anders and destroyed the Templars...because I have a special place in my cold unfeeling heart for people that share my hatred of religious lunatics.
