Towards the end of the game, Dragon Age Origins, the player is given the option of choosing who shall rule the nation of Ferelden, the country where most of the game takes place. There are a variety of choices and I'm curious as to what choices people tend to make.

It would help if you gave a reason for your decision.

In my first game at least, I went with Anora. She's an actual politician rather than a bumbling everyman, and my Warden wasn't interested in ruling anything.

Also, I totally betrayed Alistair when he made me choose between him and Loghain. I thought he was being an unreasonable little shit, so I sold him out in favor of gaining Loghain's strength and tactical experience. So Alistair was never really an option for me.

All of the above. I think I played that game too many times.

Though, Anora+Alistair is the best option really, Anora is a competent politician, Alistair gives her added legitimacy and is smart enough to get out of her way.

My first playthrough of that part resulted in my favorite scene in DA history. After Alistar defeated Loghain in single combat I told Alistar to execute him. Cue a hard cut to Anora getting the blood of her father splashed across her face and crying out in horror. I turn to her an ask, "So you and Alistar are still getting married, right?"

I convinced Alistar to simply lock her away as a political prisoner after that.

My God, that was the best payoff for Lohgain/Anora's arc I could ever ask for XD

My favorite character was a Mage, so he couldn't rule (too bad for Ferelden). Alistair ran away crying after I decided to have Loghain undergo the Joining, so Anora was the only option.

Where's the "depends" option for those of us with like 20 different playthroughs?

I usually go with Alistair and Anora for my male, non-Huam Noble playthroughs because there's not as many unique outcomes when playing a male. If my Warden is hatin' on Alistair, and I haven't hardened him, I go with just Anora. If I do Harden him, I let the theatrics play out and push him to behead Loghainn and forcefully take the throne. My Human Nobles always end up on the throne, because that's just how I roll. A few of my female non-Human Nobles end up as Alistair's lover. Oh, and when applicable, Anora gets her ass locked in a high tower.

(Hardened) Alistar and Anora. I reasoned that they both had a claim to the throne and it was politically expedient to unify them. Anora was a very politically savvy lady, Alistar on the other hand had a better stage presence, making the two a very well balanced force as I saw it. That, and I thought it wise to get a sympathetic voice to the Grey Wardens on the throne after Loghain's campaign against them, and the most diplomatic way to do that was to act with Anora rather than against her.

I told Alistair to man the hell up and had him rule with Anora. My human noble couldn't be arsed to rule Ferelden as he had other stuff he would rather be doing.

I need a new face after breaking it by laughing so damn hard at this. I might have to play through the game again just to see that.

In the vast majority of my play throughs I toughen up Alistair and marry him to Anora. The ending slides seem to show that it is the best combination.

I managed to convince Alistair & Anora to rule together to my surprise on my first playthrough which I found to be the best decision for the realm.

My first one, I had them rule together. For about five seconds. Then Alistair guilt-tripped me, so I reloaded a save and had Anora do it by herself. This was also due to the fact that I broke Alistair's heart because he was my romance option at the time. On another run, I had them get married while Alistair was still himself (not hardened) and was able to convince him to calm down. So he didn't guilt trip me, and I was with Leliana anyway, and the kingdom seemed to do fine. Then, I had Alistair rule by himself and lock Anora away. I felt bad for her, so I redid that. Basically, I like having Anora run the country.

I agonized over that decision almost as much as I did over who would rule the dwarves. The implications, both in the game and after you beat it, sound like they will affect tons of things in Dragon Age II. And, for that matter, Dragon Age III. I still have trouble choosing who should rule the dwarves.

And then Dragon Age II came out and I was shown that NONE OF IT MATTERED! Thank you so much for that. Ugh.

I felt bad convincing Alistar to go through with marrying Anora, but the joint marriage seemed like the best way to opt for peace.

I went for warden + Anora the first time, but usually went with Anora + Alistair. I think having the two of them makes the most sense since they balance each other out in terms of personality and since he doesn't have experience in power while she doesn't have a blood claim the the throne.

Alistair. Anora just rubbed me the wrong way.

Also, if there's anything I've learnt from living in my country, is "always do your best to keep political power away from sociopaths".
