Poll: Dubbed or Subbed?

Well, I used to be firmly against dubbed movies and anime, and insisted they were far better with original language + subtitles. But I recently re-watched Gantz and Elfen Lied with both the english language track and english subtitles on and my god, the english language versions kicks the shit out of the japanese + subs versions! The english acting and writing make the subtitled versions look like piles of poorly translated garbage.

So, which do you prefer, dubbed or subbed, and have you seen any other examples where the english language version is superior to the subtitled version?

I always prefer to consume my media as close to the source material as I can get, so subs.
It's the same reason I try to read books in their original language.

That, and the Japanese voice actors are just better for the most part.

Depends on if it's done well. for example certain animes...Not mentioning any names have their mouths and the speech almost completely out of sync or completely changed something so it doesn't make sense when you hear about it later on.

Subs by a long shot, American voice acting tends to really suck. I feel they tend to be worse at it solely because they don't seem to really understand WHAT they're saying, just that they're saying it.

If in English and Norwegian I prefer nothing, or subbed, anything else I want it dubbed... I need to be able to hear and understand what they are saying, I hate being forced to focus on the text and not really follow the action.

I usually prefer subtitles. But I don't watch a lot of films or series, so..

Subbed all the way. I like learning new languages and to be completely honest, I think that the artist that made the show/movie wants to give a certain feeling to his creations and those feelings get mostly lost in translations (like wordplay jokes). I'm pretty sure he checks if the voice actors can deliver that feeling before showing it to the public.

Also... nowadays cartoons can easily be made to simulate lip movement to words. It can be pretty obvious sometimes that the dialog doesn't fit.

Fun fact: Did you know that most of Europe translates the English movies? So far Greece and Holland don't and that makes them awesome!

I mean, I even put up with the old 4kids One Piece dubbing.

I default to subtitles, but I give dubs a chance to impress me. Sometimes, as was the case with Negima!? and Kanon, they do.

Anime tends to be dubbed well. For me normal films have to be subbed, dubbing removes some of the emotion.

Subbed, 100%. Sometimes, a lot of context and emotion is missed in shoddy dubbing. Plus, some of the subtitles can be hilariously bad.
