Whether you like dubstep or not, you can not deny the fact that its popularity has increased in leaps and bounds since the middle of 2010. Hell, even Rusko is producing the new Britney Spears album (as much as that pains me to know.) However, as dubstep slowly moves from the UK underground to the radio, do you guys here at Escapist believe that it is going to be the next big genre of music to explode through the mainstream this decade like Hair Metal in the 80s, Rap in the 90s, and Pop in the 2000s, or are its underground roots too strong to allow it to do so?

To those that are listeners of Dubstep, will you continue to listen to dubstep even if you see 12 year old girls screaming names like Doctor P and Nero like they do Justin Bieber now? Personally, I would be a bit turned off the genre as a whole if it busted through the mainstream like pop but hey, that's just my non-conformist nature. Discuss.

EDIT: The first option frigged up somehow and it's supposed to be, "Yes, It's going to hit the mainstream harder than a freight train."

What actually defines something as Dubstep?

The only song I have heard is 'Me and You' by Nero. (I assume that's how it it spelt) So to me it's just "electronic"

Where's the "What is Dubstep" option? I do not know what this "Dubstep" is.
I know it's a music genre, but that's it.

Every time I hear it my brain starts wishing it would just let go and kick into a straight 4 to the floor dance beat.

I think a few things.

Firstly, I think kinda came and went already (2009-2010) and we're seeing a dying star.

Secondly I don't think its "underground roots" will keep it from going mainstream, i think its sound will. Most people just don't like that kinda thing.

Finally if it did, I wouldn't care a bit. I'm not so shallow that I change my tastes just because 12 year old girls happen to adopt them.

For everyone who doesn't know what it is...

Anyway it's played in most clubs in England i think (Or maybe it's just the Northeast? =\), I've just gotten used to it, but i don't actually like it (if that makes sense)

I think it's mostly in britain that Dubstep is popular. Here in Sweden House and dance remixes rule the clubs with an iron fist.

Which i to be fair prefer to dubstep.

A 10 year old style is the next big thing?

Nope.
Yeah, that's never happened before....

*coughSeattlegrungeretrorockindiemusicetc*

Anyway, don't care as long as I don't have to listen to the garbage. And I hate the mentality that it will suck just because 12 year olds know it.

If Dubstep takes over before Drum&Bass I'll be very disapointed with Hollywood. But it wouldn't be the first time

Well the ministry of sound has already embraced it with their shitty Dubstep compilations, so who knows now.

Hell, their's even a scene genre of dubstep now titled Dubcore which mixes Dubstep, and hardcore screamo elements.

So...cheesy

Though i do think Dubstep itself, will not be turned completely mainstream, mainly because it has a far more niche appeal than commercial music.

Though expect to see more pop artists to adopt more Dubstep elements into their music.

My friend is really into dubstep and has tried, on multiple occasions, to convince me of its greatness.

I... I just don't get it. Much prefer some DnB over this stuff.

It depends, a lot of the rubbish popular dub will come and go, as a fad. The better stuff like Burial and Kode 9 will last, but I suspect it won't become as popular. Its really a lot like any other genre. Yes Green Day is awful, popular rock, but that doesn't mean I'm going to stop enjoying Radiohead (THE KING OF LIMBS!!!!) or Modest Mouse.

This is maybe a bad example, but their is quite alot of different kinds of Dubstep. Some that are just "wibble wobble" for five minutes, and others have a electronica like sound with a dubstep beat and drop.

personally, i prefer the latter.

While reading the OP's post, I thought Dubstep was a rap group. 1 minute later I caught on. I still prefer metal.
