This is my first thread so here goes.

It's now 9 days till England kick off their world cup campaign against the strongest USA side in years. England breezed through their qualifiers scoring the most goals out of any team, winning all but one game and destroying the european quarter-finalists Croatia twice (4-1 and 5-1). England are a rejuvenated side as of late, after not qualifying for Euro 2008. Their new manager Fabio Capello is the highest paid manager in the world, earning 6 million a year, and some say he is the best of the best, adding self confidence and discipline to the team. The results have certainly showed and England are expected to at least reach the semi-finals.
America on the other hand are a dark horse of the competition. They are a very well disciplined side who have many talented players such as Landon Donovan and Tim Howard. The USA finished top of their rather straightforward qualifiers losing to Mexico and losing and drawing against Costa Rica. They got the worlds attention when the beat a strong Spain side in the confederations cup, fresh from winning Euro 2008. Getting out of the group stages will be a success for them.

The match is set up to be a clash of 2 great teams on the second day of the competition. Some are calling it "David and Goliath" but I think it will be much tougher than some people might think. The inventors of Football (or soccer for you americans) and one of the top teams in the world against the up-and-coming Americans.
So, who do you think will win? What would be the reaction in America if they beat England? Will England win the world cup?

PS: I'm English by the way, I tried to make a balanced view of both teams.

If england doesn't win, i will rage (no offence to americans, just english football team has had crappy luck as of late) and take it as a sign god hates us.

Americans might be rejuvenated but if Capello fails in making england the winning team, we might aswell kiss our chances of doing well in this tournament goodbye. And we can drop that pretence of being one of the top teams straight into the bin, because clearly given our track record we have no right to call ourselves that.

Edit: That said i will not vote "england will win" because I wouldn't be betting on it. England have a bad habit of messing up which ensures we can pluck defeat from the jaws of victory.

England should be the clear winner of this match. They are far more experienced, have a better technical level, and in my book, they will probably reach the semifinals.

I am from Argentina, I hope we can make to the semifinals...not sure since our qualification was awful, we barely qualified

EDIT: Interesting how (at this point) "I dont care about football" tops America on the poll

I think the team that actually calls football 'football' will win. Bloody Americans, the rest of the world calls it football, why do you have to be different?

Personally, I reckon England will win, but it'll be a close one, especially if England perform as abysmally as they have done of late. I'm predicting a 2-1 win to England, myself.

If the USA win however, I think it likely that Capello will suffer a bit of backlash, but England are still going to go through the group stages at the very least, since America are our only real challenge in the group, methinks.

Hah, hah.... No. It would be nice, but no, not unless Capello performs a miracle in terms of our team's layout and performance. Still, I think we'll make the quarters, maybe the semis at a stretch.

I'm pretty sure Capello isn't the highest paid manager in the world...but I'm not sure, I hate footballers/football managers and the obscene amount of money they make so I tend to ignore that. But that is for another rant/thread.

Back to the topic at hand, I think England will win by 2 goals. The Americans aren't as bad as I thought they were but they aren't really that brilliant. They're a good mid-ranked team, really. I do think they'll get through the group, though along with England. And I think of America beats England, we will not hear the end of it. Ever.

And England will win the World Cup.
Provided we don't get unstuck in the Quarters and it goes to a penalty shoot out again...If any one from the England team/staff is reading this (Very unlikely but still) I have some advice for you.

England should win on paper, but England have a habit of letting down their supporters.
USA are a good team i'll give them that but i still see it going Englands way.

I didn't know England had a national football team! Awesome! Is the US team just like whichever team one the superbowl, or do they just use the best players all around? Damn, I hope Eli Manning is QB. Peyton would also be awesome.

I am so excited. I never knew there were huge international games! I hope USA wins, we have just wanted it more for so long, you know!

TOUCHDOWN!

Jay Kay! Just practicing for when I actually watch the game.

I hope NASCAR does something like this soon. I think those people over in London, France, Italy, England and other city's in Europe would be amazed on how fast we drive. NASCAR would blow them away! They probably will try to enter all Mini Coopers or something stupid like that. Woooh, AMERICAN MUSCLE FTW!

I don't care for football... but I know enough to say that England will win.

Calumon: I'm not sure who to support. Where I came from, or where I am now?

Well, as an American, I think I can speak for a good number of us, in that we don't really care about football/soccer. And, well, if our previous world cup showings have anything to say, yeah, we are probably gonna lose to the English.

I'm English, and follow Football, but I really hope England don't win the world cup. I know that sounds really unpatriotic and that I'm saying it for attention or something , but I have legitimate reasons.

First and foremost the players in the current England team are; to put it bluntly, human-shit. They're overrated, overpaid, morons (have you heard the way the talk) - if you hear the number of stories about them abusing their position as celebrities (Joey Barton - although he doesn't play for England - being a prime example) and hear how spoilt and pampered they are, having a high place in society for kicking around a ball...it's pathetic, to the point that I believe such people don't deserve to achieve the ultimate success.

Everyone knows England won the world cup in 1966 - everyone knows the names of many of the key players in that team - do you really want the likes of John Terry, Steven Gerrard etc to be remembered in such a favourable light? Hypocrites that have contributed nothing to society but tacky newspaper headlines should be remembered for decades over a sporting event. Of course, it's the sort of thing the media builds up, but that doesn't make it right - the players attitudes towards such attention, and the impression they give to the younger generation (Wayne Rooney's constant swearing and hassling towards the referee) displays role-models we could do without.

So for that reason I hope England do not win the world cup (that and idiots use such sporting events to make themselves feel good), however I do believe they'll beat the USA; if only because England get lucky (see the recent game against Japan).

I know my stuff
England are a rejuvenated side, but it begs the question if they can finally overcome their demons and show what they are capable of. Capello isn't necessarily the best, but he's a strong dominant general that isn't afraid to tackle problems openly. I'd put him in the top 5 in the world along with van Gaal, Mourinho, Ferguson and Hiddink. That being said, when was the last time England weren't a favourite or expected to reach the semis? I'm kind of getting tired of all the journalists that heap so many praises on them and year after year they don't deliver. Technically they have one of the best teams in the world, but that doesn't win you championships. With Capello I expect them to reach the semis, nothing more and nothing less.

USA are a much stronger team, altough I wouldn't even go close to calling them a darkhorse. They'll do well, but have no chance of winning it in my book. I could very well see them upset England however. It's a much harder game than many people predict, it all depends on how Englands mental makeup will be going into the game. I'd say a 2-0 win for England or a draw, if England aren't able to get in the tournament mindframe.

The only joke here will be when the US trainwrecks those pansy Englanders all the way back to London. They will be all like "Oooh, they're after me lucky charms and a dingo ate my baby!" Then BOOOOM!!! ROETHLISBERGER TACKLES THE ENTIRE TEAM!!!!

Sick tight. When is this going to be on, I haven't seen anything for it on TV. I don't want to miss this. I don't think there is a single person in Great Britland that can stop that man. Probably not even in the entire Country of England.
