Almost every game I've ever played that had a save feature warned against turning off the system in the middle of a save. Once when my sister was playing Silent Hill, my mom accidentally shut off the power to the system (it was wired to a cord connected to a light switch) and even then she didn't lose data. I've heard of third party memory cards losing data on their own, but I've never first hand witnessed the effects of shutting off a system mid save. What happens on systems with an internal hard drive? I'm too afraid to give it a try.

Don't want to talk about it I'll just give the basics.

130 hour FFVII save, step dad: "Turn that off now", me:(after a bit of arguing) "Ok just let me save", "no, now!" *unplug*.

Jesus fucking christ I went skitz, and I've never forgiven him.

I've never had it happen due to power outages no. Once I went screwing around in a save file of one of my SoC save files to see what wonderful suprises I could add to my char. Didn't turn out well

I did lose a save once. It was on Fallout3, my best character too, but I don't know why it happened. Luckily I reloaded from a only slightly earlier save and get all of my data back, but it was still disheartening to see that I had lost a few hours of play time.

Yes. I lost a save in NHL 2005 that was 12 years into a 20 year campaign thanks to a corrupted mem card. About 120 - 150 hrs gone.

I. Was. Pissed.

A little brother + the memory card era = epic fail. The bastard would always mess with em. The best is when he was curious what the "Format Console" button would do on my Wii.

I was 30+ hours into Persona 2. There was a power outage when I was in the middle of saving my game. I have yet to get back to the point I was at because that game is so damn hard.

I was on the third disk of FFVIII and the save just corrupted. I don't know why though because I didn't shut the PS1 off while it was saving.

Yep. We were trying to get Mewtwo on Super Smash Bros Melee. We were around battle 650 when my 3 year old sister turns off the game as it was saving. Seven hundred battles later we got Mewtwo. Two weeks later we lose the game.

Pokemon. For christ sake there is nothing more annoying then losing you saves on that thing. I remember one of my saves. About 1000+ hours. All it took was for me to drop my gameboy and for it to crash and the save was corrupted.

FFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUU...

It has happened to me several times with different games. I hate it, especially when you've played for hours and hours. It's a good idea to have more than one save file often.

For those of you reading this who could only purchase a PS2 and are thinking about buying "Soul Calibur III": If you delete one of your created characters, you will permanently disable saving in the "Chronicles of the Sword" mode. Please finish "Chronicles" as many times as you see fit (usually once or twice) before deleting characters.

Lost my 150+ hour Oblivion save due to a power outage. I didn't play it for months.

I have one around the same time now, though, but it's not the same. *sigh*

My Pokemon Soulsilver froze up mid-save a few months back. The data got corrupted, but they have a failsafe system built-in so that if your data gets corrupted, it reverts back to the save before it. So...Yes. Yes I have.

Once or twice had a save file corrupt; never normally a reason for it usual. Thankfully due to only ever having a PC, I'm normally good with saves and so most I've ever lost is about an hour.

Missingno. gets a bad rap. Just because he hangs out with some of his bad cousins from the Old Man glitch, doesn't mean he corrupts saves like them! The only thing corrupted by a true Missingno. is hall of fame data, and it can cause game crashes if deposited in the PC box.

I know rather a lot about save corruption on older Pokemon games. I've learned that many glitch Pokemon can corrupt saves badly, but never Missingno. Oh, and check out this glitched TAS of Pokemon Yellow:

<youtube=cYHYL8JJsFo>

I discovered the original save corruption glitch making that run possible, although it was Gia and Bobmario who discovered how to teleport to the Hall of Fame so quickly.
