So I've played through both of the recent Fallout games (sans DLC) and after playing New Vegas for a while I realized that I wasn't having as much fun as I had playing Fallout 3. True, New Vegas has a better story line and characters in my opinion but I found the Mojave Desert really boring compared to the Capital Wasteland. Also, even though they fixed a bunch of the problems that I had with Fallout 3 like adding true ironsights and weapon mods I always found the overall gameplay in Fallout 3 to be better. I talked to a few of my friends and some said that I was right and Fallout 3 was the better game and some said New Vegas was better so I was just wondering, what's you opinion?

I was having fun in New Vegas.
Who am I kidding, I didn't have time to have fun. It fucking crashed every hour.

At least Fallout 3 had the courtesy to work for >4 before it crapped out.

What I saw of Vegas (before I realised I couldn't be bothered to play it any more due to the crashes) was good, just as good as Fallout 3. Shame they couldn't advance past the beta stage.

I CAN'T CHOOSE!

I love both of my Fallout Babies.

Fallout 3 had a better feel for the character, yet New Vegas had a better plot. Instead of being black and white, there were grey areas! Fallout 3 felt like a better world for me, but New Vegas had really interesting side plots, involving dark ideas, for example, rape.

But if I need to choose...new vegas

Fallout 3- I loved the story of my Vault Wanderer looking for her father while I hated the whole shot in the head find out who did it part of New Vegas.

Fallout 3 felt like a flowing story. New Vegas felt like a post-apocalyptic whodunnit with a choose your own adventure tagged on at the end.

Fallout 3 is better in the atmosphere and exploration department. Not surprising, because that's one of the things that Bethesda does really well with their games.

New Vegas, was better in every other area for me at least. It actually was a Fallout game, factions from 1 and 2 weren't just shoehorned into the game like they were in 3 (There was no reason for the Enclave to be as numerous as they were in 3 and weren't the supermutants completely wiped out at the end of 1?) Bethesda should have really just went with the reboot approach, maybe that would've made me like 3 more. There are just some really silly plot elements.

Both of them were equally glitchy as hell for me. At one point Fallout 3 crashed every 30 minutes for me, had less CTD's on New Vegas, but there were definitely more quest bugs and such.

Edit: I still think 3 is a good and fun game, but it isn't a good Fallout game.

I just had way more fun in Fallout 3. I liked the story more, the characters more, and the random amazing weapons more.

I love them both, and am playing them both basically at the same time. Right now I'm focusing on getting all of the achievements for Fallout 3's DLC, then I'll be going more hardcore into New Vegas - finally learned how to play caravan, and I'm considering playing it with real cards. Cause it can actually be pretty fun

I've had and will have much more fun in Fallout: New Vegas. I prefer it in every aspect, actually.

Fallout 3, definitely. I thought New Vegas was a bit boring. It wasn't bad, by any means, but The Mojave Wasteland just couldn't hold my attention the way the Capitol Wasteland could. Washington seemed more varied, and yet a more dreary and lonesome place than New Vegas. I liked that.

It's made quite difficult to check the rules, in case of forgetting what you can do with a jack, for example. Opening help and always scrolling to the very last pages of it.

The picking of cards (and many other parts of Caravan) were a complete mess before the patching. But the AI still isn't too sharp. And it's a rather simple card game where you can generally success with doing the same thing, if you've made a deck for a good style and don't have bad luck with the cards you get in hand. But with the weak AI opponents and simplicity it's quite of an easy way to make money.

Luckily, it's an RPG. Where money doesn't matter that much, and I like that they've made it rather approachable, so it doesn't actually require several years of live poker experience. It's still a fun game, and as said, a part of the RPG experience, rather than just a way to get money from. I always feel cheap and it worsens the experience if I do something lowly in a game.

New Vegas is a lot better, especially in the story department, which is certainly helped the karma meter being largely replaced by the factions reputation system (and by the ending not being so completely retarded). I also liked what they did with the companions this time around, by integrating them into the story more and making the process of recruiting them more engaging, like helping Boone find the person who sold his wife to the Legion, for instance, as opposed to simply paying 1,000 caps so Jericho can "buy supplies and equipment" or whatever it was. In fact, the only place I'd say where New Vegas is significantly worse than Fallout 3 is in regards to all the glaring technical issues.

I have four seperate playthroughs in Fallout 3 with over 100 hours.

I have one playthrough that I saved before each major choice to see every ending after playing on and off for the two months after it was released in Vegas.

Vegas is almost identical in every way to Fallout 3 except for the world around you and the people, and I didn't hate it (I even loved the vaults in Vegas more than Fallout 3) but overall I think the Capital Wastelands were a hundred times more engaging.

Fallout 3 gave me much more reason to care for my character. Seeing his birth, childhood and vault exit brought a great reason to actually go through the story. New Vegas didn't have any of that at all with your random courier who had no impact on the world before getting shot in the head. Also, the sidequests in 3 seem more memorable to me.

Although game play and challenge wise, I'd much rather prefer New Vegas. Hardcore mode, weapon customization, all the various factions and multiple quest branches really gave me my money's worth.

So 3 wins for character back story and setting, while New Vegas wins for pretty much everything else. Also I have a feeling I'll be replaying New Vegas more than 3 simply because of all the different ways you can end every quest. Guess my vote goes for New Vegas.

Vegas baby!

I felt that NV had a better and more cohesive story line. The main arc in FO3 was nowhere near as interesting and seemingly it felt shorter with entirely too much reliance on side quests for content.

Tesla cannon, gauss rifle. No more need be said. Til Vegas gets em, I'll stick with 3 GOTY edition.

Uh, New Vegas does have both the Gauss Rifle and Tesla Cannon (granted, the Tesla Cannon has the prototype label and is orange but regardless same weapon).

I haven't played Fallout New Vegas, and I voted for it.
I did watch trailers, read the wiki, browse theories, watch a Let's Play of it, renting it next week, and in general totally geek out over it. And the difference between New Vegas and Fallout 3 are actually large. And those seems to be the atmosphere, plot, quests, and characters.
Personally, New Vegas just seems like it hits all of those subjects better than it's predecessor. While the story in Fallout 3 was very nice, I found it a bit lacking in character. It's very black and white morality (BOS v. Enclave) in comparison to the rest of the Wasteland, which is very gray and gray. New Vegas does this right; the side characters and the plot involve personal decision, and gray and gray morality all around.
