So, A little backstory first.

*WARNING: HERE BE POKE-NERD TERRITORY*
I recently bought Soul Silver and a second hand DS to play it on. It was in a bundle with Heart Gold, so I gave my girlfriend HG and she bought a second hand DS as well.

Anyway, I've been playing through it, having a blast. I'm up to the pokemon league at the moment, training my pokemon so they don't get totally crushed by the Elite Four and I find out an interesting fact.
One you get all 16 gym badges from Kanto and Johto AND defeat Red, you can pick from a Kanto starter from Prof. Oak.
'Wow!' I thought. 'Now I'll be able to have another of my favorite starters ever!'.
Then I get a little msg over MSN and my friend tells me that I can talk to another guy and I get to pick from a Gen 3 starter pokemon too!

Now I'm down to a choice. I can only get one of each. Which ones should I choose?

As a side note, I've already gotten Totodile as my starter (Feraligatr = favorite pokemon ever), and my girlfriend bred and traded me a Cyndaquil for a Totodile I bred with a ditto.

So Escapist, can you help me decide?

Charmander. But don't start to evolve him until he hits lvl 36. He should know Flamethrower by then, and if you evolve him into Charmeleon and Charizard at the evolution level, he won't learn Flamethrower until lvl...I think...52.

Squirtle will always be boss.

I mean seriously, he turns into a giant turtle. With Cannons.

In its shell.

Charmander and Squirtle evolve cool as shit, and Bulbasaur just gets lame. Blastoise eventually gets ice moves, but they've become less effective in recent times.

I dunno, I think Bulbasaur is and has always been the most reliable.

1. Torchic. Fire/Fighting is just a crazy combo
2. Bulbasaur. He's probably the most balanced to handle anything.

Haters gonna hate.

Sereiously tho, I am seriously thinking about blastoise. My only reservation is that I've already got a water type starter who in my eyes trumps Blastoise. Seriously, it's an eight foot tall, bright blue crocotile. what's not to love?

I am considering Blastoise tho, because his base def. stat at lvl 50 is anywhere up to 167, wheras Venusaur and Charizard are 148 and 143 respectively, and I'm all about defense.

lol some valid points. ^^

Torchic is an awesome combo, I've just got reservations about it because of Blaziken, to me it just doesn't look right.

As for Bulbasaur, Ivysaur is the most awesome looking grass type starter ever. ^^

Squirtle is the best starter overall.

Also, Torchic is Gen III. You're thinking of Cyndaquil.

1st gen: Squirtle. 2 words, SHELL CANNONS.
3rd gen: Mudkip. 2 reasons, 1. He is water/ground so the ground type block what would be super effective electric attacks. 2. i herd u liek mudkipz lol

btw I agree with the awsomeness of feraligatr, but I have to say that Houndoom is the greatest pokemon to date.

Sorry, I mean gen 3 starters on the title, so the torchic etc. etc. is correct ^^;

And statistically Bulbasaur is the best gen 1 starter overall since it's the most balanced.

Gotta go with Squirtle, even though I prefer an all EEVEE team myself.

And statistically, that's a complete fallacy.

Blastoise [http://www.smogon.com/dp/pokemon/blastoise]

Venusaur [http://www.smogon.com/dp/pokemon/venusaur]

Statistically, the Pokes are quite similar in terms of stat totals. However, Water is only vulnerable to lightning and grass, whereas Venusaur is weak to Psychic (because of it's poison subtype), fire, flying, and takes normal damage from ground-type attacks rather than 50% due, once again, to its poison subtype.

Blastoise also has a wider movepool, enabling different strategies.

Overall, Blastoise is going to be better for 90% of teams.

*EDIT*

Forgot to mention that grass attacks are almost never used in competitive play, so Blastoise effectively has one weakness, whereas Psychic and Fire are two of the most used attack types in UU/OU, and flying is pretty common as well.

then according to that you should pick Mudkip for 3rd gen since its water/ground so if no 1 uses grass and you have ground to block electric its has no weaknesses in competitions.
