Quick Note: Other refers to the "New" Super Mario Games for the DS, Wii, 3DS, and Wii-U. And the Super Mario 3D Land for the 3DS and 3D World for the Wii-U.

Mario Mario Mario what can you say that has not been already said? Well I can tell you a story of my first encounter. My first true memory of my first video game ever was Super Mario 64, I remember the day me and my Brother were at Toys R Us, my mother bought us a brand new Nintendo 64 with Super Mario 64. I remember us hooking it up to my Grandmother's Living Room TV and boom I was than introduced to true 3D video gaming. And I have been a gamer ever since I played that game.

I will always cherish that memomry.

Now you may think that because of that story my favorite game would be Super Mario 64?

Wrong

Galaxy is the absolute peak of Mario's 3D games. And to this day I hope Nintendo makes a 3rd one for the new Nintendo Switch.

Super Mario World was the most imaginative one, and the most fun. A single, coherent map (rather than a succession of smaller "worlds"), chock full of secrets (including more secret levels than any other game, I think), and a move-set that gave more precision and freedom than most of the others.

Honestly, 64. Its the one that I most often feel a desire to play. The original is next for me though cause it was my first game ever, but then I am perhaps too used to it.

64 was so fun to explore and learn new things about, and the worlds were super interesting and different. In Sunshine everything is tropical, and I dont like tropical. And I just dont like Galaxy.

64.

The sheer elegance of its control scheme despite 3D analog controls being relatively recent is simply mindblowing. I still regularly go back to it, and Mario moves so freaking smoothly, it's insane.

For the 2D category, my favorite is Super Mario World (nostalgia + great world and level design). For the 3D it's a tie between Galaxy and 3D Land.

Last one I played was SM64, and even then I got so bored with the repetition I put it down before I got even 50 stars.
I really don't get the appeal of Mario, like at all. I'll go with he was popular 20+ years ago when his competition was pong, the Atari2600 and internet porn wasn't a thing, but we have real games now. And porn.

How is Mario still relevant?!

Simplicity isnt a bad thing. And there isnt really anything like Mario that prevalent that isnt Mario. Mario games are the purest platformer games out there.

I get that. I get its a platformer, and if you like platformers fair enough. But the reason that type of game was so popular was because it was so easy to program. Same with space games on Atari. Black background, white dots. Easy.
Or zombies in indie steam games. No AI or weapons needed. Just red jam and movement.
Platformers...just having the character model move right and jump is very easy to program.

To me Mario is an expression of limitations, and its very dated. Even modern Mario games look obsolete, like a remastering of a 50s B sci-fi movie where, thanks to modern technology, you can see all the zippers on the monster costume, the terrible negative effects used for lasers, the awful lip syncing and straight up cartoony props.
Mario should never have been in 3D, and ideally should have stopped when 3D became a thing.

Based on how the last movie and game were received, one could argue its really not.

SMW is still king to me, but I still really liked SM64. It was a revolutionary game in terms of player movement and ability within a 3D world. Thinking about it now, most games still pale in comparison over the sheer satisfaction of simply controlling a virtual character.

Having said that, I couldn't get into the Galaxy games. All the constant spinning made my head ache. Maybe someday I'll give them another try, but not sure how much good it will do.

Because it's a very polished series of platformers. I personally prefer Rayaman Origns and Legends for being slightly more bouncy and kinetic, but Mario's simplicity will always hold some appeal.

Super Mario World.

The last of the 2D-era sidescrollers, SMW represents the very pinnacle of what Nintendo - the creators and undisputed masters of this concept - could get out of it. The setting itself, a huge world with amazingly diverse environments, is awe-inspiring in its own right, but of course the real star is the impeccably polished gameplay.

The controls are tight and the challenges are varied, and new elements are constantly being introduced to keep things fresh. I especially enjoy the way certain levels include unique features that aren't found anywhere else in the game (such as the 'timer' platforms in 'Valley of Bowser 3', which fall out of the air when the number on their side reaches zero) or even deviate completely from the established gameplay formula (a particular highlight being 'Forest Secret Area' in which two flying platforms carry Mario through the air at what feels like breakneck speeds).

Honorable mention to 'Vanilla Secret 3' - the dolphin level.

This was the first game I ever owned, and I still play it on occasion. It is truly timeless.

From the 2D ones: Super Mario Brothers 3. The 3D ones; Super Mario Galaxy 1.

Galaxy especially did a lot of good for the series by getting rid of the HUB world structure and the time limits on levels. Unfortunately the former reared its ugly head again in the sequel. Now all Nintendo needs to do is give us camera control. Playing a 3D platformer with a fixed camera always feels a bit funky to me.

Was a tough decision between SMW & 64, but came down on the 64 side mainly due to how mind blowing it was at the time. That was probably the first game that I played for days on end, hunting down all the stars and secrets, was just an amazing world to get lost in.

I still rate it as one of the most complete and flawless games I've ever played.

In 3D is Galaxy 1, maybe it's the orchestra, maybe it's the sheer size of everything, but that game just feels wonderful to play

In 2D is a tie between Mario World and New Super Mario Bros. Wii, I love World for the colors and the controls, I love New because of the power-ups and the flow of the game.
