The open levels made for lame Yoshi and going in circles in the Forest of Illusion (I couldn't remember how I got out of there the first time.) keep Mario World from being a great Mario game, imo. The game wasn't that amazing after everything SMB3 introduced and how creative many of the levels were in that game.
I agree tbh, world just felt like a retread of 3 and was the first main Mario game I was lukewarm about. I also really did not like Mario Kart which was the first game with Mario in I had played I actually disliked later M64 killed it for me for years (still the only main Mario game I have been unable to play because I find it so bad). Galaxy 1 (less said about 2 the better) however was phenomenal best 3d platformer ever imo.

So for me the best mainline Mario game would be SMB3 for 2D and Galaxy 1 for 3D. I find it very hard to choose between them but if I had to pick one I would go with Galaxy by the smallest of margins ofc tomorrow I may feel different as its so close for me.

That's a pretty huge pool to wade around in...I haven't played all of them but I do have some favorites. When it comes to the 2D Mario games, my favorite is either NSMB-Wii or Super Mario World. Nostalgia and the fact that it's an easier game for me makes me lean towards Super Mario World but the final boss fight against Bowser in NSMB-Wii is probably my favorite final fight in the entire series, 2D or 3D. I really liked NSMB-2 on the 3DS but I'm going to go against the grain and say that I didn't care too much for any of the Nintendo Original trilogy...or quadrillogy if we're counting lost levels. SMB3 is an undeniable classic but I'd much rather play Super Mario World.

When it comes to 3D Mario games the choice is a lot easier for me since, and I'm going to be controversial again, I don't like most of the 3D Mario games. I liked 3D Land and Galaxy but 3D World was probably my favorite. Galaxy was fine when it wasn't giving me vertigo and dizziness and I loved the portability of 3D Land. 3D World was structured more like a 2D Mario game in a lot of ways but I had more fun with it than the other 3D Mario games.

1 - Super Mario 3D World
2 - Super Mario World
3 - Super Mario 3D Land
4 - New Super Mario Bros. Wii
5 - Super Mario Land 2: Six Golden Coins
6 - New Super Mario Bros.
7 - Super Mario Galaxy
8 - Super Mario Bros. 3
9 - Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island
10 - Super Mario Land
11 - Super Mario Bros. 2
12 - Super Mario 64 DS
13 - Super Mario Bros.
14 - New Super Luigi U
15 - New Super Mario Bros. U
16 - Super Mario 64
17 - Super Mario Bros. The Lost Levels
18 - Super Mario Sunshine

I'll admit I've barely played any of the 3D Marios except for Sunshine, but of the ones I have played, I think I like Super Mario Bros. 3 the best. While I think Super Mario World really added a lot into the mix, something about the aesthetics of SMB3 really draw me in. Each world is unique, and are fun to explore. The minigames are a nice touch and great to play around with. I love the power-ups, especially racoon Mario and frog Mario. The ability to select power-ups on the map before entering a level is a nice touch. I also dig the final stage of each world more so than in Super Mario World, a flying battleship is just a lot more impressive than a tower.

As a connoisseur of playful platformers, I like to believe my opinion is no less than objective fact, testable and proven by centuries of academic research and thoroughly peer-reviewed by the independent council of co-operative fuckwits every 5.45 seconds...when I say the only answer is Galaxy 1 and 2. There are many reasonable reasons for this answer that I could nonchalantly fish from the bowels of my intimidating intellect, but I'm going to rise above such silly logical justifications in favour of; You are all wrong!! Unless you are righter than wrong. In which case...have you got a spare fiver?

What I love about Super Mario World the most is that it has the most coolest upgrade that has never been used outside of SMW at all.

The Cape Feather:

Fuck Raccoon/Tanooki Mario, Squirrel Mario, Helicopter Mario, Feather Cap Mario, this right here is the best of the "flying/gliding" upgrades.

And I am sad Nintendo forsake that upgrade in favor showing off more Furry Mario:

Agreed. Learning how to control the flying and dive bombing to find all the secrets was a far more interesting challenge than slowing hover up or climbing up walls to obvious hiding spots. The speed of the ability feels so empowering by itself.
