I think it would be fun to discuss everybody's favorite shooter engine. Mine would have to be the Unreal Engine because the gunfights always seem to be most visceral of the shooters I play, and it makes for some really nice imagery. I don't know why this is, but when I played Star Wars: Republic Commando, Gears of War 2, and Bioshock, I just got a feeling of the gunfights being well-coordinated and the controls being responsive.

I love the source engine. Sure it doesn't have the most amazing photo realistic graphics but it runs very solidly for an FPS type game. Half Life 2 and Left 4 Dead are examples of this.

I'm not sure what it's called but I was very impressed by Killzone 2's engine, the lighting is fantastic.

couldn't pick one.

1. the flexibility (and mod-ability) of gamebryo. (the fact that civ iv, warhammer online and fallout 3 all use versions of the same engine is kinda staggering to me.)

2. the scalability of the source engine (the fact that L4D, HL2, TF2 look as good as they do on as much hardware as they do is amazing).

3. the environmental effects of lithtech / jupiter ex. (fear 1+2, condemned 1+2.)

4. the lighting, ability to simulate dynamic weathers and lighting "moods", of the xray engine. (stalker + clear sky).

i'm an idiot. i forgot the fact that i love the open-level design capabilities of the cryengine family of engines (including dunia). to some extent x-ray engine has some of that ability, but not quite. (barbed wire fences...)

i've only seen screenshots, but the lighting does indeed look amazing.

(not out yet, so doesn't count to this thread's scope) the 4A engine also looks amazing, seems to also do deferred shading and global illumination lighting stuff. killzone 2 and the stalker games both used some method of deferred shading so i'm very curious to see 4A's version running.

Unreal for visuals. Im still blown away by some of the ingame visuals the current unreal engine can produce... and it can do it at a pretty decent framerate.

But engine is nothing.. depends how you use it. Im sure if they spent time putting halflife on the unreal engine it wouldnt turn out that bad. It would be a pointless exercise though :p

Voted Unreal Engine since it's so sweet at everything and so damn versatile.

-Unreal Tournament 3
-Gears of War 1/2
-Mirror's Edge
-Bioshock
-Mass Effect
-Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe

And that's just stuff that's already out that's using it. Now, even if you don't like any of the games listed, just understand this:

1: Most of them play awesome and smooth.
2: They all look fantastic, but I suppose everything does these days.
3: They're modifications on the same engine, but are all pretty different games.

The engine Guerrilla Games made for Killzone 2. I don't know what it's called and I'm not even sure if they've named it, but whatever it is, it's amazing. The CryEngine 2 would be my second favorite and the Unreal Engine is my third.

I like Source because it's modular so it can be updated much more efficiently than any of the others listed there, but it's not as mod-friendly as the Unreal or idTech engines.

EDIT: I'm sure some nitpicky asshole is going to come along and remind me that Source has its origins in idTech 2, but they're almost completely separate and nothing that I have said in the above paragraph is untrue.

I love the story of the Unreal engine. Just how Unreal Tournament (on Unreal Engine 1) came out and totally blew Quake III out of the water with its far more innovative multiplayer action, causing the gaming world to sit up and realize that there were worthwhile high-end FPS engines other than id's.

Source. The best graphics for the lowest price.

Characters look uber realistic. I mean, it's almost like Unreal Engine, especially the 3rd edition, but it requires a nice PC to show the best.

KZ2 engine is very impressive but I'm not a PS3 fan.

Halo 3 engine looks pretty and runs very smoothly.

Source engine just gets better and better.

It's hard to pick.

Go source, ragdoll proplelling and see-saw puzzles rock!

It's very awesome if you get jumpshot in L4D, he Team Rockets off.

cryengine 2 is really fun to look at, and i'm fascinated by some of the things it can do, but i haven't played a great game made in it yet. i wonder sometimes if crysis (less so warhead, but still) wasn't more of a tech demo than a game. isn't someone making an MMO in cryengine 2?

Quake III Engine.

Yep, more games were made on the Q3 engine then any other.

I voted for the Metroid Prime engine, just because I really have no concept of what it means outside said series.
