Poll: Favourite era of history

Tis a simple question. What era of history most interests you, and why?

I my self am fascinated by what the poll describes as the 'Ancient World', in particular, the Mesopotamian civilizations. The first cities, the first societies that can be described as civilized, the first written code of laws, the first written stories, all of it. Not so much into ancient Egypt though.

And yes, I know the poll is somewhat Western-biased, but come on, only 8 slots and about a thousand different eras.

I read loads of historical fiction on the medieval period, so I'm going with that. Really like the renaissance too though.

Classical - so much of modern civilisation is shaped by cultures and ideas from this period, how can you not be. Also, philosophy. And awesome mythology.

Personally my favourite era would be the 18th century Georgian era, the power of the British Empire at the time fascinates me, as does the monarchy.

The "Medievil" era interests me the most, especially the events such as the battle of gallowmere and what happens afterwards :3

That's a difficult one.

I'm currently doing an MA in late 19th century medical history (specifically lunatic asylums) but I'm not sure if that would be my favourite period. I know this sounds really cliché but I don't think I have one. In every period I've studied I've always founnd something to sink my teeth into.

I have interest toward ancient history during the dynasty era in China, mainly because I like to learn more of my heritage.

Late 18th to 21st century would be where my interest is most. To me the modern era and modern western civilization began with the French revolution so essentially there and onwards is the important bit of history in my book.

20th century history definitely. Things like Medieval history bore me to tears.

Broadly, I'm very interested in three periods:

1. Classical Antiquity, starting from the Doric occupation of the Peloponnesus through to the early Roman Empire (it holds me until about Tiberius... so very early Imperial Rome).

2. Enlightenment era - from the career of Prince Eugene of Savoy right through to the Wars of German Unification... primarily because I'm a sucker for Teutonic history.

3. WWII... yeah.

You're kidding me - I'm the ONLY ONE to vote for the Renaissance? It's like the Medieval period, but INTERESTING - seriously, studying medieval history bores the crap out of me, it's all church records and everything. With the Renaissance, you get a resurgence of all the great works of the classical period, followed closely by religious dissent and the reformation, the wars that followed, all the political and religious restructuring that happened - boom! It's awesome.

Classical is a close second, Early Modern/Victorian a close third.

The 20th century because no other period of history has such change and progress on a global scale all within the span of a single life time. From the first aeroplanes to putting men on the moon, the rise of the automobile, the first computers, the internet, an exponential increase of scientific knowledge in all fields; nearly every technology that defines our society today saw its origins in the 20th century. There were also the two world wars which shaped the political climate we have today. The 20th century is also the most recent and thus the most complete with all the small details still remembered so that even for such a short period of time, there is so much to learn.

I love the Classical period. Particularly Greek history, but I know a decent amount of Roman history as well. Though, my knowledge of the Classical era is spread amongst the different societies that existed at the time, so I am not an expert at any of them.

Honestly I'm all over the place but the World Wars have traditionally been the focus of my recreational reading.

I prefer the future to history but if I have to choose then I'd go with classical. The Roman empire was just awesome. Rome: total war taught me a lot. Who said video games doesn't teach you.

I have also just been playing Dynasty Warriors 7 none stop for the last week so I have an interest in a really specific area of Chinese history now too.

My area of interest is the Late Middle Ages into the Early Modern Period.. specifically the Protestant Reformation and Catholic Counter-Reformation.
