What's your favourite genre of video games? What are some of your favourite games in this category? What makes your choice better then the others in your opinion?

I'm going with RPGs. I think that RPGs generally have better stories, replay value and depth then the other types of games. My favourite RPGs are Pokemon Crystal, Final Fantasy IX and Chrono Trigger.

Even split between RPGs (of all stripes) and fighting games. I'm equally fond of Baten Kaitos and Arcana Heart, Wizardry 8 and Soul Calibur 2, Tales of the Abyss and Super Smash Brothers Brawl, etc. Something about the extensive storyline and breadth of gameplay options in the former and the intensity and spirit of the latter really make them for me.

Since the latter aren't in the poll, I'll vote the former.

I completely forgot about fighters. I mixed action and adventure into 1 to make room for fighters.

I claim not to be a devotee of any particular genre, but taking a look at my stack of games, I see an improperly high number of survival horror games. And yet, if you asked me, I'd say I wasn't really a fan of the genre.

Huh.

I've never gotten the definition of Action-Adventure. That seems like it would describe most of what I play (Zelda, Mass Effect, Dragon Age, Arkham Asylum), but most of those are also RPG (I think).
Those aren't well-defined genre's like FPS and Platformer.
Oh well, in order my favorite genres are
1) Action-Adventure/RPG
2) Platformer
3) Sports. No sports option on the poll, eh? It's a pretty booming business. Just ask my friends who buy the new NCAA game for every sport every year. I'm still ticked off that there are NO good baseball games on the 360 (The Bigs doesn't count). Friday Night Fight Round 4 and Forza are great. But the baseball games are always chock full of bad gameplay mechanics and game-wrecking glitches. I hate you, 2K Sports!

I'm assuming that Strategy fits under Sim. I love my Starcraft, my Heroes of Might & Magic, my Europa Universalis, Hearts of Iron, my Dwarf Fortress, Disgaea and Final Fantasy Tactics.

Since RPGs are up there, I'd love to see another game in the free roaming style of Might & Magic VI.

Some of those could count as RPGs rather than sim games (Disgaea and Final Fantasy Tactics come to mind). "Sim" probably is the word for turn-based strategy like Heroes and real-time strategy like Starcraft, though.
