It would seem BioWare's progressive bone is twitching.

Following the announcement that a Shepard of either sex will be allowed to pursue a romantic relationship with a character of his or her own gender [https://twitter.com/#!/CaseyDHudson/status/69833443067969536], Director of Marketing at BioWare, David Silverman, recently tweeted that a trailer showcasing Jennifer Hale's incarnation of the Mass Effect hero(ine) will be released [http://twitter.com/#!/dsilvermanea/status/75280820184694784], if not in time for the developer's E3 presentation in early June.

Furthermore, he's invited fans to vote on what visual characteristics the iconic FemShep will have, such as hair and eye colour. [http://twitter.com/#!/dsilvermanea/status/75265617749483520]

Personally, I'm very happy with these news. While I respect Mark Meer as a voice actor (his bit part in Dragon Age 2 as the camp elven prostitute Jethann [http://dragonage.wikia.com/wiki/Jethann] was absolutely glorious!), I always thought his Shepard rather lacking, bordering on dull.

Jennifer Hale infused that character with so much life and tenacity, I think it's absolutely wonderful that her performance finally gets the public recognition it so duly deserves.
Not to mention that there is a staggering shortage of female action heroines in the public eye in any media, so that one so deliberately and believably molded as FemShep is added to that short list is a definite improvement in my eyes.

I'm less happy about the vote on FemShep's appearance, however, as it might imply the character model won't be nearly as detailed as the infamous Sheploo. [http://ui23.gamespot.com/2166/ewwwtf_2.jpg]
That's all speculation, though, and it might turn out they are simply allowing the fans some peripheral influence in the design; a rather generous bone to throw considering the support for FemShep has been something of a grassroots movement over at the BioWare forums [http://social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/128/index/3171265/1]

Granted, this might seem like fairly trivial news, but considering the fact that the male render has been the marketing favourite for both of the previous games in the franchise, I think it considerable that they seemingly opt for inclusion so wholly in this final installment.

Any thoughts on your end? Reactions? Is this a gross exaggeration of its importance, or a noteworthy event?

[UPDATE:]
Well, according to another illuminating tweet by BioWare's director of marketing David Silverman, the female incarnation of Shepard will also be featured on the tin of the N7 Collector's Edition of Mass Effect 3. [http://twitter.com/#!/dsilvermanea/status/81370996879273984]
This information was already in circulation as evidenced by the contents of the package [http://www.geek.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/n7_ce_vignette-en-p.jpg] was released during the 2011 E3 convention, but has now obviously been officially confirmed.

I honestly don't care whether Shepard is male or female in the trailers, I have my own version of Commander Shepard and that is the only one that matters to me.

I don't usually watch trailers, so I don't really care that much to be honest. Having said that, I still think it's awesome that Bioware acknowledges that there are people who prefer FemShep and Jennifer Hale to the male counterpart.

No matter how it turns out, my Shepard will continue being female.

Holy crap, that elf was Meer?
Wow. If he can do that well, then why the hell is his Shepard so damn bland?

As for the topic at hand... eh, whatev's. I don't really care if its male Shepard or female Shepard being shown, what I care about is the galaxy, what worlds we'll be visiting, what aliens we'll be talking with.

I want to see trailers and screenshots showing that. Not trailers and screenshots showing Shepard and/or enemies shooting stuff.

Meh, I thought Mark Meer was a fair bit better in Mass Effect 2 than he had been in Mass Effect, and I've always just used the poster-boy character, since every character ever made in the creator seems to look ugly.

Does it really matter if the character in the two-minute trailer looks different to your character that you're going to be playing as for 30 hours?

Ok, it's one of the main complaints of Mass Effect, that John poster boy is a @#$%!.

However, they're unlikely to use my Femshep, 'cos .. well .. I use a different face structure than "most femsheps" use.

So it makes little difference to me.
Another Shepard that isn't mine? Whateva.

It could be confusing to people outside the series who've only seen the male shep so far
but who cares
for the first time im actually excited for a trailer, thanks for the news!

EDIT: also red hair and blue eyes is my shep, and apparantly those colours are up there as contenders for the trailer, so yay :D

Yup, my thoughts exactly. If Bioware came to my door and said they wanted to use MY Shepard as the poster boy for the trailers, I'd be a bit more enthused. But as it stands, I don't really care much. If anything, I wish they'd spend their time on something more constructive than just trying to appease as much of the masses as possible.

Hell yeah, Jennifer Hale is a sexy woman, therefore Fem Shep is a sexy woman. I am all for Sexy Women getting the recognition they deserve.

About time they used the best voice actor they have (and they have some good ones!) in their promotional material.

This pleases me greatly. Given that I've played through all of ME1 & 2 as a female Shepard, it will be good for her to finally get a showing in a trailer.

Thing is, given that I've swore to myself to avoid any details regarding ME3 until the time I am clutching the box in my hands, I'm not sure I can bring myself to watch another trailer, even if it does have FemShep in it.

Here's hoping the trailer, whatever it may be, is in a similar vein as to the first one released, being that it doesn't give too much detail away about the plot.

A red-haired Female Shepard would do nicely. I'd need to go back and see what my one looks like, to see if there's any chan ce of a match.

Absolutely they should give FemShep a trailer. Yeah, women should be represented more in games, but I'm more for this because Jeniffer Hale is an outstanding voice actress. This is more about giving someone more credit for doing a great job.

P.S.: They really need to add more options for females in the character creator. I struggled to make a good looking female Shepard. Dragon Age 2's character creator was great. Steal it!

Since for me Shep will always be female this is great news.

However, also less enthused about getting to vote on her characteristics. My Shepard looks and has always looked like a cross between Lara Croft and Stana Katic, so seeing someone else's Shepard with my Shepard's voice will be a little weird.

Then again, I've been so bored with Mark Meers I never watched any trailers with male/Shep, and maybe the fem/Shep trailer will be enough to make me actually watch a trailer with Shepard in it.

How very odd of them. The Cannon Shepard is male, this has been established since he appeared on the cover of the first game. To have some trailers use a female Shepard will only result in inconsistency and confusion.
It's not even like it's a new and amazing feature they're revealing - everybody who's played either of the other two games will know that they can choose Sheperd's gender. And not only that, but the appearance as well. I don't know a single person who has used the default male Shepard.

So yeah... other than to please fans, this doesn't make any sense at all to me.

Actually, Male Shepard is not canon. He is the default face of the franchise (or rather, was up until now), but at no point has BioWare claimed that he is the "right" Shepard.

In fact, they have repeatedly refuted that stance. Shepard is up to the player to define, and they make no claims for an established approach.

And really, I do not buy for a second that a FemShep trailer will cause widespread confusion. Those who are already acquainted with the franchise would purchase regardless, and who knows, perhaps this will actually attract more people, those who were previously unaware that Shepard's gender was interchangeable.

P.S

Turns out this was my 1000th post on the Escapist. Whaddabouthat, eh?

Agreed. BioWare can have their "Sheploo" (of which, as a heterosexual male, I'll admit that actor/model is one sexy man), but I'm more than content with my Eri [http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v602/Ruffin316/Hi-Def%20Sage%20Screens/ErikaAllisonShepard3.jpg]ka [http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v602/Ruffin316/Hi-Def%20Sage%20Screens/Problems.jpg].

It'll be nice to finally see how her saga ends...
