Alright, I know it's a little early to start talking about Halloween, but my friends and I have got some pretty big plans brewing this year. We're even talking about making a flaming wheel of doom (hence the subject). What we're thinking is that we'll put copper nitrate (which burns blue) and kerosene in something (probably made of metal and shaped like a trashcan lid) then light it, and cap the whole thing with a lid that has little vents on the sides. That way the fire should shoot out of the sides (because of the difference in pressure). We're also thinking about setting it to rotate somehow, which would just make the effect amazing.

So, how many of you think I'm going to burn my house down? :)

The more important question here is, what about you guys? Have you ever done something really crazy for Halloween? Are you planning to do something this year? Any good Halloween-related stories are welcome; it doesn't have to be super scary... or involve a rotating, possibly psychedelic conflagration or anything...

I hope you won't miss your eyebrows.

As an Australian, I don't celebrate Halloween. There's always a few kids who go trick or treating, there's the Halloween TV specials put up by the executives who have vultures in their ancestry, but the closest I've come to actual celebration is wondering if those fuckers in the masks know how silly they look.

The sheer lunacy of your idea is enough to convince me that its probably going to work. And you'll may be charged with arson.

The only interesting I've done that I can remember on halloween is nailing a cardboard box of rocks to the top of my door, and a sign that says "Work for what you earn". Kids scrabbling for it and then being disappointed. One pissed off mother even abused my doorbell.

Did you ever think of putting it outside? You know where it's safe.

an old bicycle wheel with fire-crackers/sparklers/catherine wheels attached would probably work better, and be a little safer

That one's pretty good!

Anyway, the flaming wheel thing is just one of our ideas (and by far the most, er... flashy); we were just playing with some chemicals after a test in chem one day and decided it would be really cool for Halloween. What we'll probably end up settling on is funny colored torches.

And of course if we DO play with fire, we'll have the extinguishers on hand. Just as well, I'll be sure to bring my fire fighter friend and get his ok for the project. And I've already talked about it with my chemistry teacher, and she thinks it's a cool idea (well, we came up with the wheel of doom part after we talked to her). We'd probably be using lab grade chemicals and we'd be sure to read all the safety information and make sure the fumes aren't going to be toxic (and I don't think copper nitrate fumes are).

I just didn't want to bore you all with tedious safety precautions; I thought it was implied that I'd be sure to do it carefully. Whatever, honestly I'm more excited about the bloody lemonade...
