In front of you is a mountain of platinum, saphire and other precious materials. The golden eyes. The workers around you are whiping the sweat from their brows and muttering profanities behing your back. The expedition was a sucsess - you found ElDorado. After a hour long shootout between your mercenaries and the Brazillian military and a ten year long argument in the international court you finally inheret 15 trillion dollars in any currency of your choice.

You partner recommends you to find your own haven to keep your ill gotten wealth. The Panama islands are out of question, due to various hitmen searching for you, so there is only one solution - start a nation of your own.

If you were to start your own country, how would you do it and how would it look like?

You can go to an unclaimed desert and attempt to build a city there, you can conquer a part of Somalia and and defend yourself long enough to form a community and become recognised internationally. You can also build a platform at sea or create an artificial island. Unfortunatelly you are unable to create a space base, a flying religious city or a libertarian polis at the bottom of the ocean as they have some bad luck attached to them.

What climate would you pick? Would it be a dictatorship or a constitutional republic? How are you planning on defending yourself if you are planning to do so at all? How are you planning to attract migrants and what will be your migration policy. Will you create your own infrastructure and housing or just hope for a free market paradise and wait for it to build itself? How will you protect yourself from internal power struggles?

What architecture, culture and currency do you want your new country to have? Plus, those trillions arn't infinite, so you'll have to think about the economy sooner or later.

By the way, your final goal is to grow your country to 50k people and get recognition from the international community, what will be your steps to doing so?

http://micronations.wikia.com/wiki/Minerva

Minerva was a small attempt at creating a libertarian Utopia via artificial islands. With 100 million dollar starting budger the creator didn't spend a single dime on security, so the country was taken over after three weeks by the Tonga military. Multible groups attempted to reistablish the reef's soveregnty, however the territory remains desputed to this day.

http://www.sealandgov.org/

A well known (probably the most well known) micronation located at the coast of the United Kingdom. Originally a small limitary base used during WWII, then a home for a trigger happy familly with an ambition to become royalty. The nation had takeovers, wars and conflicts with the British Royal Navy. However, it earned recognition from Germany in the 1990's and has a fairly profitable brand that remains to this day.

https://liberland.org/en/about/

A republic created in a disputed territory between Serbia and Croatia in april of 2015 by a Czech economics professor. A slightly more sucsessful attempt at a libertarian utopia (despite the president repeatedly detained by the Serbian police for repeated tresspassing) it has a strong public image and survived through donations and payed lectures by the unelected president. So far, the republic has the population of 5-7 people and consists out of a few houses and shacks which act as government building.

The Republic of Borealia

Located to the South of Greenland, the young nation is an archetypical Chesterton-esque European town. Ruled by a senate which is elected every three years, it is a somewhat inefficient democracy. The island is constructed on an artificial reef and has to be constantly maintained in order to counter the effects of global warming and rising sea levels.

The bulk of its economy is a mix of mining the precious ores in the reef and trading with the various ships. The community is never short on contact due to the fact that it is located in the middle of a major transatlantic trade route.

The climate is rather cold and arid with long winters and arctic nights that last for up to three months.

The island is divided into three parts, each representing a pillar of society. The magister district, which houses the academic and government organs. The urb district, which consists out of blue collar workers and entrepeneurs and the mars district which houses the mercenaries and the trade port.

The millitary for the most part is outsourced to Blackwater, however with the recent changing many mercenaries have decided to accept citizenship and join the perminent army. The defence is barebones and relies on good relationship with NATO.

Diplomacy is rather difficult due to the state's will to accept political refugees and dissidents, so the archepelago has quite a few notorious hackers and whistleblowers under its wings.

I like to imagine a Scandinavian style socialist democracy. In the online game of NationStates [https://www.nationstates.net/nation=norengland], I've been running one along those lines. Its a fun little diversion of mine I've been doing for about 5 years off and on.

If I told you, I'd have o kill you. Residents of Jacktopia - if that IS its real name - are having a laugh on the rest of the world, so no information about where we are or what we're doing will be leaked to the media. No, not even Wikileaks.

Oh boy I don't know where to begin.

I guess it would be an artifical island located somewhere in the upper region of the sea for the warmer climate. The artifical island won't be an oil rig since afterall how am I suppose to grow some fruit and vegetable? (Don't intend to make a garden patch on an oil rig).

There will be law and order and everyone has freedom and rights. I won't have an hierarchy in that a rich douche can step on people cos he or she is rich. Same apply to some captain of the football team can bully anyone at will cos his father is rich (don't asked me how I enforce this).

As for the art and culture, I have no idea. Maybe a mixture somehow without anyone being offended if that is possible?

I would spend a small fortune erecting an Antarctic base, with domes and such to provides food stuffs and living amenities, top notch infrastructure, and a lassieze-faire economy that would be like honey to all the Galt-infatuated libertarians wanting to forge their own libertarian utopia without the nasty business of being subsistence farmers or having to need any sort of business regulation at all...

And then I'd bilk them for all they're worth, blaming their own idiocy for their failure in what could only be the "fairest" of economic systems. After ridding the world of the stupidest of Randians, I'd probably retire to the most secure of the non-extradition countries, helping fund the national security interests of as many superpowers as necessary to aid in my security.

Bigdickopolis would be a classical liberal libertarian society. It would be similar to the American government, but there would be no central authority figure, and I'd probably fix up the Supreme Court a little. There would be limited government that exists to protect people's rights. Also, I'm not a corporatist, so while I'd have free markets, there would probably be policies to prevent monopolies. I would set it in... I don't know. Probably some third world country that could use the cash. I'd probably try to find somewhere rocky, like Sweden. Good, isolated defensive terrain.

As for an army, there'd be no conscription. I would probably have to pay mercenaries for a while. We'd have to make the army enough of a pain that actually invading is just wouldn't be worth it. And if the economy is good enough then we'd probably enjoy international protections.

I'd probably study the growth of post war Japan and South Korea, and see how they grew their economies so quickly.

Okay, this is a bit questionable. Maybe at least nail it down to more violent or concervative sects, since there are pacifict sects of the religion.

Problem is, there's lots of countries around already, and they tend not to like micronations popping up.

Minerva is a good example, while the King of Tonga sailed out to drive them off the island they'd risen from the sea (which sounds more exciting than it is), countries from Australia to Japan had been telling them not to have a nation there.

Maybe (maybe) if you promised to be good neighbours with existing countries first this might work, but you'd likely have to shape your nation in ways that meant they at least somewhat approve of you.

Drugs. Basically a collection of narcotics producers to smuggle drugs to all neighbouring states. See, I'll just buy the territory myself to begin with. Call it something dumb like 'Atlantis Agriculture' ... eventually I'll just pay private security and give money under the table to rebel groups nearby to cause trouble for the government to justify my own private security force.

So I'll just have an unwritten accord that if they occasionally take my workers as 'hostages' that I'll be forced to pay 'tribute' or 'ransom demands' for their return or that they cease their activities. Knowing full well that by supplying them with money, guns or drugs they can continue their war against the government I bought land from, and that they will act as a natural buffer between me and the government.

Eventually trying to pretend like I owe taxes to them will be last thing on their mind.

Narcotics production provides all the initial start up capital and initial skills training a small nation needs. Agricultural skills, complex trade networks, transportation, laboratories, chemical plants and an abundance of armed people who know how to use guns... Also, I vote island nation. Boats are awesome for smuggling contraband. Plus it allows for internationally acceptable systems of salvaging. Islands kind of demand that any invasion requires speed and aerial/naval deployment even with nations close to me.

It also makes it easier to perform spyhunting operations when the means of transportation are slight and easily regulated. So all those TLAs that want a piece of the profits can easier to be detected and hunted down. I won't kill them though ... I'm sure a C.I.A operative is worth at least a few dozen crates of guns, maybe a couple of patrol boats.

Economically speaking, my island haven willeventually offer secretive bank account and transaction options to international corporations and the wealthy (thus to encourage international good will by hiding the money of the wealthy elite). It will have a militia paid for mostly by drug money profits (thus giving them a reason to promote the status quo and to better assist with its trafficking) ... and my cabinets will be populated by gun runners, mercenaries, corporate tycoons, and criminal cartel heads ... willing to develop the islands in exchange for lucrative access to my operations to hide or launder money.

Politically speaking, it would be a mess ... but nation building is a messy job. Then when my collection of islands reaches 50,000 in population ... I will overlook my military junta from my presidential palace, light a cigar, and nod appreciatively at how I made the world a worse place to live in.

In all honesty, I'd make a horrible leader of nations. I know this, so I would just appoint a vizier or chancellor to handle all the stuff I don't trust myself with.
