While watching the nerd-tastic "March Mayhem - Developers Showdown" unfold, I noticed that a lot of the games mentioned for each developers sometimes shared the same game engine.

I thought it would be fun to boil down the choices to which major engine is your favourite.

I've been playing long enough to pick out Havok physics, and I seem to be just a tad more drawn to games using it. Unreal on the hand, does make FPS games that have a real sense of immersion.

Here are the respective lists of games for each engine.

I choose Cryengine 3... Oh, right.. Major engine... As in, used in more than a handful of games, right? Then it's Unreal. ^^

I'm a fan of R.A.G.E. and its implementation of third-party engines like Euphoria and Bullet.

I do not believe Havok is a game engine per se. Rather just a physics engine appended to the game's actual engine.

I love the Source engine personally. I've spent the most time gaming on Source Engine games (looking at you TF2 and Garry's Mod). But if we're going on the most popular or diverse, I would think Unreal.

I actually like Source. It can make wonderful stuff if pushed in the right way.

Otherwise...Unreal. Easily.

I guess it's down to the little things... Ragdoll physics as an example. Unreal always seems to go for over the top limb flailing and inhuman flexibility, while Havok retains some more realistic range of motion for bodies in motion.

Or with demolitions, Unreal pushes it for bigger explosions, while Havok pushes the fine details (smoke, broken glass, concrete chips).

Uncharted 2 vs. Batman: Arkham Asylum. When you drop a baddie in Uncharted, they slump. When you throat kick an inmate in B:AA, they turn into human spaghetti. Lob a grenade in U2, and the baddies get tossed a good distance, while the environment is scorched and slightly deformed. Spray some explosive compound, and detonate it with some inmates close by, and they'll bounce off any walls that haven't been converted to rubble.

Uhhh...I had to look up what Red Dead Redemption runs on. It says RAGE and Havok. So I guess that's my answer. That game looked wonderful.

I've also grown to love Wind Waker's look more and more over the years (I hated it at first, but I realize how stupid and petty I was back when I first saw it).

I do not like the Unreal Engine. Or I at least don't like how it is often used. I liked it in Alpha Protocol, Mass Effect, and Enslaved. Nothing else, though. All those grey games that have every character looking like Brawny McBeefypecs (like Gears of War and Arkham Asylum) are so unappealing to my eyes. Everything looks sweaty and smelly in those games too.
