If you could choose between a game with the worlds best story or the best gameplay, you would choose...

Story. Because a great story can make up for mediocre gameplay. I wouldn't care that much if the gameplay was average, if the story rocked then it would more than make up for it.

Well, they are both important, but I play games to have fun. If I really wanted a good story, I would read a book (Which I do as well).

I like a good story if gameplay is average. Personally, I think both are really important.

EDIT: This is now know as the Canadian post, for it is the same number as the year of confederation (this is post #1867 for me).

I really can't choose because they both add so much to the experience, but if my arm was twisted... I'd probably choke you to death with my other arm. Anyway, I think story would be my choice if you forced me.

Meh. It depends. On one hand, you have Tetris: fantastic gameplay but absolutely no story. On the other, you have Hotel Dusk: Room 215: pretty light in terms of gameplay, but fantastic story. You also have cases of good sotries saving games with less than stellar gameplay, and vice versa...

Both aspects are important.

I prefer those that balance both.

If your going to half ass one of them, just don't bother with it. Just focus on making the other part as best as it can be, while significantly reducing, if not removing, the other part.

If I had to choose, I would say gameplay.

Because I still play games with great gameplay, I don't still play games with bad gameplay, regardless of story.

I prefer a balanced mix of both, but one only needs to see my copy of Psychonauts on the shelf to my right to see which I prefer more.

Story, that is. A good story can carry one over poorly designed levels or somewhat frustrating controls. The reverse is not as much true, unless of course we are talking of a game made to ignore story or that is otherwise extremely fun (looking at you, Painkiller...)

Despite a game should always have gameplay and story walking hand in hand, isn't it necesarry to have a good gameplay to play the game? Isn't gameplay somehow the point of a game?
When I first read the thread I found this poll kind of ridiculous. But now I'm not quite sure about it. The only thing a game seperates from a movie is its gameplay. There are many games with almost pure gameplay. Left 4 Dead works perfect with not that much story.

BUT there are still some moments where I want a game to tell me a story. Fahrenheit isn't a game which builds up on great gameplay. And man, I love that game.

Damn. It's hard to pick if you think about too long.

Story.

If a game has alright gameplay, but a great story, the story will usually make me stay with the game to the end. Whereas if a game has good gameplay, yet a poorly told or a bad story line, that will severely hinder the game experience for me.

If I had to go to extremes, I would pick gameplay, because a game can have the best story in the world, but if the gameplay's fustrating then no-one will enjoy it anyway

I hate having to choose without a both option.
But gameplay for sure.
It's called a game for a reason...so you can play it.
Besides most games have terrible stories, but awesome gameplay which is why they stand the test of time.
I mean Super Mario? Two italian plumbers do magic mushrooms and shoot fireballs to save a princess who lives in a magic toadstool kingdom from an evil dinosaur/turtle/thing?
Seriously, wtf.

But awesome at the same time.
