What do you think about video games requiring the community to put their heads together to make in-game progress. ARG's are famous for this kind of collaboration, but what about video games?

To put this into context: I'm toying with the idea of introducing essential crafting recipes through large scale puzzles and codes. These epic mental obstacles will require the community to invest time collaborating outside the game on forums and wikis.

So what's your take on it? Would you enjoy community involvement outside a game to bust some in-game obstacles?

Edit: Option 3 is "I don't mind letting others do the dirty work."

Personally I'm against the idea of not being able to access some content if I decide I don't feel like working with some people. Even in MMOs you get quite a few people who solo most of the game (sometimes as a challenge), and keeping them from accessing any part of the game wouldn't be well received.

What's option #3 supposed to be?

No. If there's no way to find it in-game by myself, I probably won't enjoy it. Even after all the recipes have been found, I wouldn't like the fact that I have to keep checking online for the ones I need.

They could just wait until the other players figured it out right?

*reads topic title* oo!
*reads thread* ...oh

I liked the idea of having real life actions impacting a game, but not community actions.

Theres a game (on kickstarter I think) where you draw something, scan it, and then you can use it in the game. I like that type of IRL effort.
Having to find a webpage on your site, daily navigating a randomly generated site map to find a page with a code that gives me some benefit. I like that type of effort.
Find some people online and do exactly what I would normally do without them, except I cant this time because they need to be there for some arbitrary reason? No thanks. Thats like playing windows solitaire, but you have to play online co-op because only player two can move cards to and from the even numbered piles.

Edit: Fyi - my poll answer is cut off. Apparently I don something.

No thanks. For pretty much the same reason I hate trade evolutions in Pokémon. Just let me do it on my own in-game. I used to own two Gameboy Colors just so I could trade with myself.

I'm not sure this site is a great barometer for that question, most people here prefer offline single player games. Not everyone, but most.

I think it would be cool if it was relevant, like in an MMO, but would be irritating for a single player game.

I do that with my 3DSs now. Not as easy as it used to be when everyone was playing one version or the other in primary school, but in my adult life? Too much effort.
