I usually turn of all the sound when i play video games I turn on my subtitles so i can listen to music, my friends think that this is a weird thing to do because they always listen to the in-game audio i was wondering what my fellow escapist did while playing their games?

But then you're missing all the effort that went into creating the soundtrack, the sound effects, the voice acting and so forth.

Think of all the people who put so much effort into making all that, just for you to mute it and listen to something else!

...I kid, of course. =P

But yeah, very rarely will I turn off the sound to a game that I'm playing.

I turn off the music when I play RTS's so I can use my own, but that is it. I would never turn off the audio because it is a vital part of immersion and in shooter games it is important to hear minor sounds, especially in multiplayer games where you get footstep noises.

The poll is too limited so I didn't vote.

I would never turn the sound off, it's important to the game and I feel bad for not listening to it since people put a lot of time and effort into making the sound.

Up or down relative to what? I keep my sound pretty normalized whether I'm gaming, watching TV or movies, etc.

I went through a phase of switching over to my song library while playing xbox games, but left that far behind, it just removes so much of the atmosphere. As for playing with no sound at all, well I just want to point out what happens to horror films when you remove the sound: they no longer freak you out. They loose their substance.

How could you turn the sound off? Have you tried playing Dead Space with the sound off? That would definitely ruin the game. I try to appreciate all the work the developers put into the project. But then again I play halo while listening to music because the game doesn't really utilize its sound in multiplayer unlike COD of battlefield.

Unless it's something like an MMO or RTS game where I'm already familiar with the sounds and they are not beneficial to me I might turn them off and listen to some music, but otherwise I prefer to have it up. It's enjoyable for me to hear the sounds as their creators intended--it's all meant to enhance the immersion. Plus in most games they are downright helpful. I tried playing TF2 without sound once, and it was a total disaster.

The soundtracks in video games is a big part of the game itself. Why would you deprive yourself of the whole experience of what the devs are trying to achieve? Unless I'm in a waiting room or on the bus I make sure I have the sound on. Music in a video game could be it's own genre

No, that would completely ruin the game for me. Hearing is a very important sense for gaming. To me, turning the sound off would be like playing a game deaf.

Audio cues are arguably as important as visual ones. You are playing half of your game. That said I have been known to turn off the music and mix my own at the same volume.

I dunno about cutscenes because that depends on the game. But I generally turn down the music, but not all the way, while playing a game.

You really need an 'it depends' option, but no, not unless there are some really annoying characters or bad music or something.

I seem to be the opposite, I hate listening to something different while playing. Usually, if I turn anything down in game, it would be the engine noises/Sound Effects a little bit so I could clearly hear the radio and dialogue.

Plus I tend to find sound effects in multiplayer super helpful. Ever try playing L4D deaf? Nightmare.

You're missing a very large part of the game experience when you turn off the sound. I only turn down the sound when I've played the game for a very long time and the sound serves no real purpose in the gameplay (like when grinding or travelling a long distance).

Only when playing world of warcraft. Otherwise, it's always the in-game sound.

I always have the sound turned up, usually quiet loud, especially for multiplayer.
The only time i turn the sound down is for racing games, having music on helps me concentrate on driving.

It depends on what I'm playing. As a general rule I'll leave the sound in for single player games, sometimes even reducing the volume of party chat so I can hear better. In multiplayer I play music, unless it's one of the rare days where I care so much about my peformance that I want to try and listen for people sneaking up behind me.

I leave it as it is but put subtitles on, as i really hate missing any words, seriously, i will reload just to try and hear that one little word i missed cuz of the music being to loud or there being too many explosions for me to hear what the characters are saying.
