So, never bothered with the Gears series, didn't interest me much. But, thinking about, at least the look of it, it reminded me a lot of Space Marines, which I found to be very fun.

To any of you who have played both games, would you say they are similar games? That you can do melee or ranged equally well when it comes to carving a bloody swath through the hordes of enemies in front of you? And basically just sort of similar in feel and playstyle?

Short answer? No, they're really not.

Long answer? Gears of War is more of a cover-based shooter, while Space Marine encouraged you to wade into melee combat in order to survive. Melee really isn't as good an option in Gears of War as it is in Space Marine; you'll be mostly shooting, while in SM, you spent about an equal amount of time shooting and slashing.

While Gears borrows many visual elements from WH40k, the two titles share little in common with regards to gameplay. Gears is your standard cover-based "stop 'n pop" affair with regenerating health. Going for melee kills with multiple enemies shooting at you is a good way to get yourself killed. You're better off using it near the end of firefights on one or two enemies to save ammo and/or humiliate your opponents in multiplayer.

What everyone else said.

Thematically they're distant cousins in that its all about burly white dudes killing everything that isn't a burly white dude with a chainsaw so big Donald Trump would question your manhood.
But Gameplay wise they're polar opposites. Gears is all about slow, cover based shooting and long drawn out attrition firefights.
Space Marine is all about FOR THE EMPEROR CHARGE! jump packing with a thunder hammer and smashing everything in the dick.

Its a bit unnecessary to chip in given the previous responses but yet another echo: nothing alike. Gears of War is basically Third Person Cover Shooter:The Game. You hide behind chest-high walls and poke out occasionally to shoot at enemies.

In comparison Space Marine heavily encourages you to get out there, stand up tall and proud confronting your enemies and then slice them open from head to toe with a chainsword.

Now I really want to place Space Marine again. >_>

He's talking about SM40K those awesome sections where you get a jetpack and a hammer taller than you, so you can fly around and bring down fury on small groups of enemies from the heavens like some very pissed off deity having a salty evening after his favorite team lost the Olympus games 5 times in a row.

Naw, it really is pretty special, and brings a nice balance to sniping and shooting, very "now you become the ultimate badass* section of the game. It doesn't come too soon either, right where you get enough a feel of the mechanics to really wreak some havoc.

OT: Everyone else has pretty much said it, but to answer your question, Gears is still a really fun series to play. The story obviously doesn't have the depth and lore of 40K stuff but it still stands well enough on it's own. Weapons are varied enough to let you try different strategies, unless you play multiplayer where it's just people rolling on the ground with shotguns.

Having played 1-3 of the series, I'd recommend it if you find it for cheap. None of them really stand out to me, really all continuation of each other, but GoW 2 did have some cool bosses. As said also, the battles draw out a tad longer than Space Marines battles, but once you get the swing of things you can really tear along at a fair clip.
