All my life I've had to put up with arseholes taking the piss out of me because I'm "ginger" (which I'm not, I have red hair but I'm not particularly pale and I don't have any freckles). When I was a kid I was bullied in school for it a lot, and always thought that it would just go away as I got older. I'm 22 now, and I can tell you that it hasn't gone away. I've had abuse shouted at me at gigs, in pubs and all sorts, the vast majority of the time without any provocation whatsoever.

What I really want to know is: where the fuck does this come from?!? I can't see any reason for it at all. I originally thought it was just a UK thing, but when South Park did that episode I realised that it's going on in America too. It's not as though it's even an underground problem, most people are pretty open about it and nobody gives them a hard time like they would if they were being abusive towards, say, a black person. It's even started seeping into the media, with MIA's controversial video for "Born Free":

http://vimeo.com/11219730

Now, I don't for a minute think that MIA's message here is "kill all redheads", but I think she really does highlight the issue of how we are seen by some people. It's almost as if it's acceptable to be abusive towards us, because we're not really a racial minority so we can take it...

So escapists, do you think this is a problem? If so, why and what can be done about it? please share any views or experiences you've had relating to the issue.

EDIT: I get the impression some of you think I'm playing the victim and I feel the world's against me. I'm not and I don't. I couldn't give two shits what people think about my hair, and these days it's not much of a problem for me any more (which probably comes from moving away from the 'burbs and going to a big city). What I'm more concerned about are people who this is still an issue for, and who get bullied for it.

For example, a friend of mine was offered a job at a major clothes shop on the condition that she dye her hair another colour. I think that shows that the prejudice runs a little deeper than some of us want to acknowledge...

When did being a ginger ever become an ism? Is there also gamerism? Or moviegoerism? o_O. . On point, no hate is deserved because of colour of hair. And saying they have no soul doesnt matter because soul is nothing nobody can prove exists so if anything Gingers can throw it right back at them. They make the claim, make them prove that they are right.

shouldn't they have to prove that they do have souls?

Technically those who say Gingers have no souls make a claim, and those who make the claim are those who needs to find proof to support said claim. Same thing with claiming someone is quote 'fat' What is the definition of fat? What is the average weight of 'enter country here' population? Is the person you are making the claim at above the average? If so how much above? When presenting an attacker with theese questions they go facepalm and get bored pretty quickly.

Having ginger hair is rare in comparison to many of the other more common colours. People (especially children) always bully those who are different to them. But I'd have to agree with the view that it is a problem, but its just one of those thousands of things that people get bullied at school for. Any form of discrimination is a problem that should be dealt with, however I am unsure of how to approach a solution to this problem.

I dunno...I guess it stopped being cool to make fun of blondes, so they make fun of rangas instead?

But, there's a real sense of viciousness that creeps in, that you don't get with blonde jokes.

using your example, most of the time someone is called fat, they give the reasons why they're not. For example,

"Hey, you're a sea cow."
"But i just had a baby!"
"ya, for lunch."

And since I make the accusation, shouldn't it be based off by measuring stick of whatever it is I'm calling you? so therefor, show me your soul.

It's because they're jealous luv. Every one knows that redheads are sexy. *lascivious wink*

I, unfortunately IMO, wasn't born with red hair, but I have two cousins - one on each side of the family tree - who are true gingers with pale skin and freckles to match. Only the boy, who's on Irish side has been hassled for it I think. I also had a friend in Ireland who had this glorious mane of long, red, curly hair and I was so jealous of it. I've always wanted red hair. I really can't see why people demonetise it so much.

[HEADING=2]Red hair is awesome![/HEADING]

Bed time methinks... and 11.15 AM...

Indeed. Some of the things I've had said about me have been very extreme, like I'm "worthless" or I should "just do the world a favour and go and die". It doesn't bother me because I know how fucking stupid these people are, but it's still a problem...

Actually first they have to prove that souls exist first, then they have to prove that gingers are the ones who have no souls. If they don't prove that souls exist then gingers, and everyone else, lack a soul. If they do prove souls exist then they have to prove that everyone has one except whoever they say hasn't.

They're not really making it easy for themselves.

HOWEVER I don't think anyone uses the "gingers have no souls" seriously. Its just pathetic schoolboy humour. You have to learn to get over it and laugh at everything! xD

I find that ginger people tend to be more friendly then the others (that my be because i find ginger people to be more attractive so i am kinder to them). Although they get picked on more then others you should never let negitive comments bother you.

Mate, own it. They can't insult you if you don't get offended. My best friend's a ginge and a bit of a nerd, people stopped giving him shit at school because they stopped getting a reaction.

What if I had gotten slighly insulted by your slightly unfavorable behavior towards me and I chose to decline your request? (In other words, no)
