I've seen a few threads about guys playing as female characters and I'm wondering, girls do YOU play with male character or a female character.

EDIT: this was SUPPOSED to have a poll, that obviously didn't work, sorry ppl who just clicked for the poll.
Also, guys, comment if you want.... just don't be an idiot

I usually play female if given the choice, simply because it is the default for me. Like me, a well-written female character has had to deal with the social pressures placed upon women, and has different expectations. If its an MMO, or something... Well, people tend to find me somehow attractive, and I'd rather it be the guys showing interest. Playing an all-male class turned out really awkward. o.o

That being said, I don't usually get a choice and have to play a man.
Though I will play a male nelf druid, simply because "lol, lore gender roles" 'n stuff. Female druids, for the most part, are a very new and weird thing.

I prefer playin as the lasses ^^ Though that may also be influenced subconsciously due to OTHER tendencies I have... ANYWAY, I'll play as a male for at least one RPG play through of if I HAVE to to get the romance option I want (fuckin Tali, the prude(jk)). Otherwise I play women as often as possible.

I play as both, it all depends on the character I'm creating. Usually my serious character is a girl since it's usually based off me, but sometimes I just want to play as a badass tough guy (then again even with all the character customization games have all dudes look like a shaven bear so it's not like I have much of a choice).

I always play women when I get the chance. I may occasionally try out a male character (when there's an option) if the gameplay will differ somehow.

I switch it up depending on the game and the options available. I often like to play male characters though in long RPG's since it makes me think of the lone explorers and fur trappers who could survive on their own for months at a time without seeing another person. Games where you are out in the field a lot, collecting items, or fighting bandits or monsters kind of remind me of the pioneering days so I just pull out a male character on the first run quite often. But if a game is toting social interaction and romance, I often try a female character first. Depends on the feel of the game.

Seeing as guys do tend to play as the opposite sex in RPGs. I can only assume gals do the same as well. 'course I can't be sure. Feel free to quote and correct me. :3

In a game like say, Mass Effect. When I play as Male Shepard, I find it difficult to do Renegade during my playthrough. However, as FemShep, being as distanced as I can be, I find it easier to commit to Renegade. It feels as if she is her own character who makes her own decisions. In this case, it's much easier for me to think "What would SHE do?".

I always play a female character if it is available it feels more immersive. I have noticed in all my years playing games that I always have a certain distance from a game like Crysis 2. I feel like I am an observer whereas when I play a female character I feel more like it is 'me'. It's hard to describe really.

As long as the core gameplay is solid and fun, why the hell should it matter what character you use?

That said, what type of character I make depends on my mood at the time. In DDO, all my characters are male, where as in WoW when I made my character, I felt like making a girl.

I'll play female as often as possible, just because that's who I am, and I always project a certain part or side of myself in the characters I create. That being said, I'll sometimes play as a male (like Mass Effect) if only to see the different options or reactions available. This, of course, mainly applies for RPGs.

I always play as my own gender if at all possible, it just feels right to me.
I've noticed that games with either a fixed male protagonist, or gender-based classes (if I don't like any of the classes available to female chars)I will play them, but I tend to get bored and drop them more easily for some reason. Probably lack of immersion or inability to relate or something like that.

Depends on the game. If I have a choice, I'd rather play as female, yes. Granted, I'd love to see practically any of the popular male characters with the option of a female version of them... Splatterhouse' terror mask on Jennifer, A Street Fighting lady-Guile, even a buffed-up lady spartan of a sort for God of War... all good to me.

ya huh!

I'm a lady and I play as a girl also if I have the option. Unless she sucks, like Amy in Sonic or the chick from Golden Eye.

I play as male, even if I'm given the choice. I am not quite sure why though...

Maybe I've just had bad experiences in the past with female characters. I can't take the character seriously if it's a woman and for some diabolical reason it breaks my immersion. They seem too butch, wanna-be machos or something completely opposite (which just may be more annoying). Or it could be the voice actors and their grunts in fight. I just can't stand the sound of them. Most of them sound like they are from a bad porn film. I know this wouldn't matter in so many games, but I still pick the guy...

Last time I was forced to play as a female character was FF13. Not only did I despise the game, they forced me to play with characters I wanted to see dead by the end of the game (sadly, this didn't happen).

Hmmm... Maybe I've just had some bad experiences. Still, I like to play as male. But I do think it's good to have the option! People like different things and if the game's plot doesn't require a male character I think the option should be available.

EDIT: typo.

If men can argue that they play female characters because they prefer looking at the ass of the opposite gender, I fail to see why the ladies can't do the same.

I play as a girl if the choice is there. I'm really crap at distancing myself from my character so in MMO's and RPG's it feels really weird to play a guy. For example, I started a male character on Mass Effect more than 6 months ago and he's still on Eden Prime... >_> (didn't help perhaps that I planned on making him renegade and I suck at playing the "bad" guy)

I did have a male belf in WoW back in the day. I kinda miss him...
