So, I was wondering what you Escapists make of our floury friend, introduced to us all the way back in 2007. For some, the cake has become an enduring symbol of hope and immense sadness, as well as a hot conversation-starter when talking to people not initiated in Portal lore. For other Portallians, the cake has since been overshadowed by the glorious potato, mounted atop the fabled portal gun. Then there are those who either care not for the cake's moisture, or simply do not have clue what I am talking about.

Complete the quote in the attached poll to show where you allegiances lie, or to be more precise, where they do not...

The cake is an over-used reference that needs to be cast into the flames of Mt Doom so that people will SHUT THE FUCK UP ABOUT IT.

It got old about 2 months after TOB was released.

The only time the cake thing was funny(ish) was in Portal. I don't get where the "joke" part is when people just say "The cake is a lie." and expect everyone to burst out laughing. What exactly is funny about repeating a phrase from a video game?

The main writer never intended for it to catch on and was so annoyed by it that he cut all traces of it from Portal 2. I never really got it either but perhaps it's just one of those nerdy things that I'm not smart enough to understand.

GLaDOS's cake has become stale because of the sheer number of individuals who are prepared to parrot that line entirely out of context. It was funny and entertaining within the context of the game, but doesn't really mean much outside of it.

That's a /thread if ever I saw it.

In my utopian society randomly shouting things like "The cake is a lie" without context or reason will be punishable by the criminal being held down while everyone in the immediate area gets to backhand them.

I actually try to implement that insofar as I can.

For example. A friend of mine's birthday, instead of like, a single cake, there were lots of home-made muffins. Someone said "So, the cake is a lie?", I proceeded to walk over to him, say no, and smack him on the back of the head when nobody laughed at his joke.

Fantastic! I prefer to not say anything and just stare at them for a moment before the physical assault, but which method you prefer isn't important as long as you're getting the message across. The message of "It's not funny! You deserve to be beaten for this! You will receive facial pain and it will be your own fault entirely!"

I'm gonna be honest, here.

I don't use the joke, and don't care who uses it.

Besides, I haven't seen anyone use the joke since...well, a long time actually. Geez, who knew random bloody advice written in a videogame would catch on so quickly and lead to so much complaining about it, too?

And as rhizhim, playing the role of captain obvious has stated, things will always get old, be forgotten, etc, etc.

Too late. I got sick and tired of hearing about Cave Johnson and his combustible lemons within two weeks thanks to idiots spamming the joke over their mics in TF2. Every time I'd mute one, another would start up.

Yahtzee was right about Portal fans being incredibly annoying. Other games might have trash-talking, racist homophobes in their fanbase, but at least they don't go out of their way to kill humor.

To be fair, at least that had some friggin' context and was actually appropriate to the situation.
