Yup, I have had a youtube account for nigh 4 years and I get back from visiting my grandparents and find that I cannot access my account without creating and linking a google account I do not have. There are no bypass functions, I cannot access my channel or search for videos. Is there anyway at all to avoid this or am I fucked for not wanting to give into google. Sure I can log out and view videos but I CANNOT UPLOAD ANY LIKE I WAS PLANNING, view my favourites or anything of the like. One could argue what is wrong with creating a google account with false credentials, I argue back that they want my phone number to verify, something I have never given out lightly. So am I permanently boned because I expect to have a choice in the matter? Additionally what is you opinion on this. Do you agree or disagree with their decisions plus their collection of confidential information. All peoples opinions are equal until their an ass about it.

Oh and encase you wonder "It is just a website, life goes on." That is not the point the point being deprived of an option for questionable reasons depending on you point of view.

Please inform me if I missed anything.

EDIT: So I finally decided to create one and managed to get away with not entering a valid phone number but not without the stupid page refreshing several times, honesty are they trying to piss me off? But I am going to pissed if this comes back to bite me in the ass in any way like it has in the past.

Are they making that phone number thing mandatory now? As I remember it, that was simply an option. In any case, I would take a look at their privacy policy - my guess is that they guarantee that your phone number won't be distributed to anyone. Still, I understand your need for privacy. In the end, however, Google is a company - if they want to require your phone number to let you use their services, that's their right, and it's your right to not take part. There are other video uploading sites.

Don't they make an account for you based on your youtube profile? They started this last year and didn't require a phone number. Maybe It's a way to try to limit new trolls?

What I do to get around that? I'll log in and when it brings me to the "connect to Google" page, I go to a different site, then go back to YouTube. I'm already logged in and it doesn't force you to connect to Google. Solved! :D

Regardless, it's still stupid and I hate it. -_-

It's their site. Don't see why integration should be a problem when they just want to centralize everything.

Like it or not it's their right as a company to make any conditions or modifies on the use of their product that they like.

Yeah, I know that, but it doesn't mean I have to like it. -shrug- Can't really think of anyone that actually does like the google-account-linking thing.

Edit: Okay, fine, there are people who like it, but it seems that most people (on average) do find it annoying.

The way I see it, I personally don't like opening accounts I'm never going to use. I have an email account elsewhere, I don't need a gmail.

I had the same problem until I realised I could bypass this by clicking on the youtube icon in the top left-hand corner.

Why am I the first one to vote yes to the poll?

...Really, you're getting pissy over this? They give you an option to sign up for a gmail account just for that with any other email you have; I signed up for mine with a yahoo.com address, and it worked fine. I ended up transferring my account to my gmail.com account anyway.

Google does own YouTube. I hope that a nicer way to say "get the fuck over it" while still conveying the attitude will arise someday. Until then, "get the fuck over it" will work for me.

Google owns YouTube, so why not?

At first I dismissed the recommendations, but as they got more aggressive now, I just joined one Google account to it. There's no harm. I only have an YouTube account to view all the content (except the ones which are blocked because apparently the country I live in is a bad place for record companies) and to be able to save videos to favorites.

What is slightly peculiar, is that apparently you can login to almost anywhere with a Facebook account.

Oh, and this guy already killed the thread:

I don't think there's really much of a problem, only takes two seconds, but it did annoy me when I realised I couldn't access my YouTube account without a Gmail account. I don't really see why they require you to have one, but it doesn't seem to have changed anything too drastically.

^^This^^

That, and I'm sure there's a little button that says you can skip the process. The only downside to this all is that it tries to remind you every time you log in, but that's a small price to pay for being able to use your YouTube account without problem.

Specifically to the poll question: Legitmate? yes. Right? It's not right or wrong, just a company doing what it thinks is best for its stuff.

I think it is wrong to force it. It seems counter-intuitive to google's business model and their motto.
