I'm pretty sure that most of us here have played Pokemon Gold & Silver for the Gameboy Color, hell I'm still playing it with my good ol' Gameboy! But, just a few weeks ago it was re-released with an all new updated version for the Nintendo DS, and let me say....ITS FREAKIN AMAZING! Besides it being just a port, there are many new and awesome features to keep you playing for a very long time.
OVERVIEW:
The game starts out like all Pokemon games, you give your name and gender(what is the damn professor so dumb he cant tell your gender?!?!?!) Anyways, you get the 3 basic starter choices of Cyndaquill(fire), Totadile(water), and Chikorita(grass). The map is still exactly like the old game, even down to little details like the 2 kids with dueling RATTATA's on Route 30. In he old games the kids number you first get, his name is Joey, and he calls you with nagging calls about his stupid RATTATA losing to a freakin' METAPOD! Guess what our good friend joey does in this game....THE.EXACT.SAME.THING!!!!!!!!!!!
GAME MECHANICS & GRAPHICS:
The graphics are like Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum. Changing from the classic 2D everything, to 3D everything. The buildings looks great and are very detailed. The waves in the water move nicely, as with the flower boxes in Cherrygrove, the flowers just flow. The People and Pokemon sprites are very well colored and are very smooth. The game mechanics, well you walk, run, fly, bike all that. The top screen shows the actual game, while your bottom screen shows your main menu, so no more pressing Y. The main menu contains: Your card, Pokedex, Pokemon, PokeGear, Save, Options, and your bag.
There is one gripe for me, battles happen way, way, WAY to often and it can get quite annoying after a while. Battles play out like in every Pokemon game, Player A selects move, Opponent B selects move, Attack, Attack, Win or Lose. Nothing bad, animated attack scenes are nicely done and very pleasing to the eye. Once all 8 johto badges are obtained and you have beat the elite 4, you can go into Kanto, and get all of the badges in kanto. In total you can earn 16 badges in total.
Difficulty:
The game starts out easy, teaching you regular stuff....BUT MY GOD DOES IT GET DIFFICULT AFTER THAT! The gym leaders can get annoying but are easy to finish, but its when you keep facing your rival, He gets very tough at the end. The elite 4 is just death if your not prepared. They are very hard,I'm not able to beat them quite yet even with my Lv.66 Torterra. That brings me to my next point, connect-ability.
HG/SS can connect to Platinum, Pearl, and Diamond so you can trade Pokemon in between games. The game offers Wireless battles and trades, as well as Wi-Fi battles and trades. The trades are like the previous games that use GTS, or Global Trade System.
The PokeWalker Accessory:
This little gift is what put the price to $40. It's simply what I like to call a Pedometer Plus. What it does is count your steps as you walk which produces its own little currency called WATTS. WATTS are used to find items and battle. To battle you must transfer a Pokemon from your PC box to the PokeWalker. To that can be a little tedious. The Pokewalker connects to the Game Card using Infra-red. But for it to work good, it needs to be basically touching the game, and needs to be on a flat surface. I tried doing it on a couch and it kept disconnecting. To battle, it costs 10W(WATTS). You have 3 basic controls, Attack is the left circle, catch is the middle, and right cirlce is evade. It's very simple since you only have 4 health bars. The dowsing machine costs 3W and all you do is take 2 tries to find an item, thats it. Once you trade the Pokemon back to the game, it transfers all WATTS you have which contribute to the routes you unlock. You start with 3 routes to go on, each contain different types of Pokemon. The more WATTS you transfer back, the more routes you unlock.
OVERALL:
Over all this game is absolutely great. The controls and interface work very fluently through out the whole game. The difficulty rate is perfect with the right amount of toughness, its very enjoyable.
