These two games have created a lot of buzz, are supposedly both going to revolutionize MMO's, and may be released more or less at the same time. So, who here has been caught up by the glimpses the devs have shown so far and has already made their purchase decision? Which will you (not) get?

Myself, I enjoyed the first Guild Wars, and I'm excited about the new dynamic event structure. I think it's a good idea, these type of large open missions that you just walk into were the better parts of MMO's like Warhammer and Rifts, but they were hampered by the fact that you did those occasionally between the big piles of regular kill and fetch quests. The combat system sounds like a lot of fun too, although I do worry if it will work well with the no-party structure. (There's only a few non-stackable boons you can give to allies, and you have no way of knowing if they already give that boon to themselves as far as I can tell. The GW1 enchantment system might have worked better.) But I'm hyped up enough that I will at least try it once it comes out.

The Old Republic on the other hand... nah. I'm not that big a Bioware or Star Wars fan. A bigger story empathis might be fun but from what I heard the gameplay is a bit too average.

I personally don't enjoy MMOs but both of these games have promised to deliver in different areas that I think need improvement in MMOs. GW2 in combat and TOR in story. I'll have to see how they do when they come out but provided that they are both equally good in thier own areas I will probably go with TOR because I really like KOTOR and I am a bit of a star wars fanboy.

I'm looking forward to Guild Wars 2 myself. It looks fun to play, while TOR, well doesn't. And that's whats most important about an MMO, the gameplay. If it isn't enjoyable to play, I don't care how good your story is, because I'm paying 15$ a month for it. Doesn't mean I won't try out TOR though, it's just that the gameplay looks pretty boring.

Besides, Guild Wars 2 doesn't have subscriptions, so I could buy that anyway.

Hmm, WoW with lightsabres and a godawful art style or a completely fresh experience with a great art style?

I'mma go with Guild Wars 2. Inb4 fanboys saying ToR is innovative.

While I follow Bioware with almost unhealthy reverence for their epic storytelling in games (something I heavily subscribe to), I've never bought into the idea that the same single player experience can be replicated in an MMO where there is just thousands upon thousands of grievers ready to ruin your immersion. The game itself does look very polished, but from what I can see it's still the same old WoW formula just given a fresh coat of paint.

Guild Wars 2 on the other hand, is offering lots if innovation in the MMO department that we've hardly seen thus far. Yes, both games will most likely be immensely successful in their own right; but if one of these games were to become the "revolutionizer" of the genre, I'd have to put my money on Guild Wars 2, simply because having played the original Guild Wars for 4 years, I really think their developer ArenaNet is bringing a lot of good MMO philosophy that the market dominated by WoW-esque iterations have been lacking.

Philosophies such as no grinding, difficulty scaling, same endgame gear for everyone and most importantly I think, Pay to play box sales as their main source of revenue.

If I ever decide to play a new mmo, I'll play GW2, but I'll wait a bit.
I've had enough of mmos after a few years of playing them.

Here's the shtick, GW2 is pay once, while TOR is sub based. There is absolutely no reason why I shouldn't get both (with my economy, in a buyer scenario) I am equally looking forward to both of them. Oh, and TORs main selling point is being solid, highly visual and have a huge focus on STORY. I'll play it as Kotor3, more or less.

Ive spent a shameful amount of time playing GW, plus it wont have a subscription, so its a day 1 purchase for me.
However im unsure about ToR, i'll need to see how it plays once its out but i hope it does well because i love Bioware

Seeing as I was looking forward to guild wars 2 ever since it was announced, I'll go with gw2. Another problem is that gw2 is possibly the most hyped-up mmo ever, and, although it will live up to its expectations, people will bash it for that and side with sweater.

TOR for sure. Been waiting for a decent Star Wars game for ages and almost everything in TOR clicks for me as an MMO. Love the addition of story (oh God I love it so much), love the setting, the combat, the look and feel of it, the classes etc.

As for GW2, I'll be getting it. It's just too much value for the money not to really. But in all honesty - I'm just not feeling it at all. I can't say why. I've played GW1, loved it until I moved over to WoW. The instanced, 2D world is gone and that was my greatest gripe with the game. It's looking impressive on all fronts but somehow, it just ain't drawing me in, simple as that. I'm sure I'll enjoy it, but I greatly doubt it'll be my MMO of choice.

GW2, I was a massive fan of the original and loved it for years and I simply cannot wait to get into the new one.

On the TOR front, I don't like the Star Wars universe at all so that's a non starter.

From what I've seen and heard, Guild Wars 2 seems to be better but I guess I'll first wait until the two games are out before I finally decide which one I'll play.

Hahaha. Not even a debate. Guild Wars 2 is clearly going to be superior. I think even Bioware has accepted that already.

This is probably sound bias since I'm a huge GW fan so I will be buying GW2 for sure (well I need to buy a new pc to run it).
TOR however while I have played and loved KOTOR 1 and 2 but at the end day TOR is still a point and click to attack like many other MMORPG (one of the reasons I sto playing GW now). Ok yes GW2 is still the same but it handle different (since the game allow you to dodge attack by moving out the way or sidestep).
TOR does got better cinematice trailers but those are merely eye candy and not repersent the gameplay at all (but they are still awesome to watch).
Lastly GW2 is still free to play while TOR isn't although with the recent MMORPG going free to play TOR may become free in the future.

I suppose I should mention I will getting Diablo 3 aswell but only because my friend will be getting it aswell (who keep nagging me to buy it so we can co-op).

Caught between the successors of two of my favourite games ever. I absolutely adored KOTOR and love Bioware....but TOR just doesn't look appealing, gameplay-wise anyway. GW2 looks like it'll be engaging on multiple levels - I reckon the story'll be worth investing in - and while I'm a huge fan of the Bioware writing pillar, an MMO necessarily draws more emphasis away from that than in single-player games. Tyria also looks stunning from what I've seen.

That said, I don't want SWTOR to fail at all. But no subscription? Engaging gameplay? DRAGONS? These from a company with experience in the genre and a universe that follows more directly from its predecessor...it's a no-brainer. I'll be keeping an eye on TOR, but GW2 all the way.

Tough one to comment on, Guild Wars has a solid base, recognisable name and a dev team which has experience in the field of MMO's, but The Old Republic has the name star wars and the ability to play around with Midi-chlorians..............

I guess success is down to which group of nerds can shout the loudest

Well I'm going to get both but I'll have you all know I'm in the SW:TOR Beta and I'm not allowed to break the NDA but I think I can tell you guys the game is fucking spectacular

EDIT: And I'm not joking.

I'm as big of a cynic about games as Yahtzee ('if you don't get your hopes up you'll only ever be pleasantly surprised') and it is true the game has its faults but its really great and its capable of so much great things
I wonder why they would make you sign an NDA. After all, if it's really good, the more you talk about it the more people who will think about buying it.

OT: Since I've heard they've done a lot to cut down on the grind in TOR, I might give it a shot. I don't hate some grind, I wouldn't ever play an MMO if I did, but the WOW level of grind is why I left after that free 30 day subscription wore off.

I guess what it comes right down to is do I want to stab things with a sword or a light saber, shoot them with a bow or a laser. When I answer that question, I'll let you know.
