I know among the MMORPG community this is quite a fierce topic, and many gamers of each game despise the gamers of the other game.
I will admit to being a Guild Wars player. The main reason for this is I started playing two years ago, while in high school and so didn't have the disposable income to dish out £9 per month on WoW. I've completed all of the Guild Wars installments and still play, but I've been getting quite interested in WoW. I've put together what I think makes each better. I'd like to hear other people's opinions.
Guild Wars - More realistic graphics, better fighting mechanics, more skills, epic storylines, map travel, non-grind, instanced to allow for solo-play.
World of Warcraft - Higher level cap, more complex gameplay, larger community, huge worlds, no loading screens, open-world designed to bring players together.
The release of Guild Wars 2, however, is looking to be a lot more immersive and more stunning that either of these two games. It'll feature open-world for most of the world, like WoW, but will still feature the signiture instanced missions. The large storylines of Guild Wars will be replaced with many smaller storyline arcs to make the game more 'sandbox'. We'll just have to wait and see.
