This is very, very, very exciting. I am so happy that they are finally making another of these. It warms my heart to know Notch is a big fan of the series too. Who's pumped?

Age of Wonders 2 and Shadow Magic were awesome, and I'm looking forward to this. Wise decision, Notch, wise decision.

I like how theres a lot of thread like this one where the OP is so excited about something that dosnt bothers to explain just what the hell is the thing they are excited about...

Seriously... I have never heard of this game. I DO know who Notch is, but thats also pretty easy for some random gamer to know...

Hahahah. Sorry for lack of details.

Age of Wonders is a series by Triumph Studios, which is in the Netherlands. (Hence Notch's support and love for it.)

It's in the vein of Lords of Magic and Master of Magic, with turn based combat and map exploration. I feel though, that this game really consolidated all of the strong points of it's forebears and got rid of all the deadwood and sloppy design. Also DAT MIDI MUSIC for the first game is my favourite. For srs.

The first game came out in the late nineties, the second and it's expansion (Age of Wonders 2 and Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic respectively) came out in the early 2000s.

At the core, it's just a great high fantasy TBS (turn based strategy) with a good story, streamlined combat and great potential for nerd chills through each game.

Enjoy! I certainly will.

Thus is eliminated any doubt as to which Age of Wonders the splash mentioned. A game I like, advertising a game I like.

I have no idea what Age of Wonders is. So far all I know is that Notch is funding this and not Psychonauts 2. So it better be damn impressive.

To google!

This looks like Civilization: Fantasy Edition from the screen shots on one of the links, would I be correct in that assumption?
The overhead map is, but it also does turn based battles when your forces clash. So it is closer to a blend of Civilization and Heroes of Might and Magic.

Looking forward to this one when it comes out, the second game was a lot of fun to play with friends and hopefully this one will be too.

OH COME ON!

Seriously, Age of Wonders was a fantastic series of strategy rpg ala Heroes of Might & Magic from ye olden times of 1999-2003. A combination of part Civilization and Heroes with an emphasis on hero characters and world-shattering magic.

And when I say world shattering, I mean literally. One of the coolest features of AoW was how if your race specialized in a certain 'sphere' of magic and you became powerful enough, you could cast spells to start changing the environment around you with often catastrophic results. If an ice and a fire culture each are trying to take over and both are extending their realms, you'll see volcano exploding where the two borders meet as both sides magic grapple for control. Play as one of the death races and you could make the world die around you, with the most powerful hero leaving literal trails of death and destruction in their wake as they cross the campaign map.

It was fantastic. Surprisingly fun combat, tons of spells both on the overmap and in battles, tons of races to play and a huge variety of units, leveling paths for heroes, even underground and otherworldly dimensions for maps. The games were huge and awesome.

Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic in particular is just amazing. It's a shame the series was so little known, although I didn't know it was this obscure, and it's great to see it emerging again.

Oh, really? Awesome! I loved the first game, didn't care all that much for the second, but I can probably say I'd be pumped for a third.

Hmmm, sounds a little bit like Celtic Kings but way better.
Count me as interested.
