Black Mesa is the most highly anticipated Half Life 2 mod for next year. Its effectively a remake of Half Life 1 but with Half Life 2 engine, graphics, physics etc. I played Half Life 1 after playing Half Life 2 and enjoyed them both but I look at this and I'm amazed by how accurate they are staying to the Half Life 1 setting. They are going over everything again including re-recording all the voice acting. In total this mod has been in development for longer than Half Life 2 was in development. I generally dislike remakes of old games but I think this may be an exception to my rule. Looking at the concept art, level design, weapons and characters and the unbelievable, true to the original, accuracy of it all is stunning. Post any opinions or thoughts I'd like to hear them.

It was also the most anticipated mod for this year, and last year, and 2006, and 2005. Don't get me wrong, I can't wait for it, but I'm wondering if they were planning on bundling it with Duke Nukem Forever

I've only heard about it recently in a PC Gamer magazine I got and I know it has been in development for ages but still hopefully seeing as so many years have gone by they might be coming close to the finish.

wasn't this done already? I thought when you buy the 'Game of the year' edition of half life 2 you get Counter-Strike: Source, Half Life 2: Deathmatch, and something called 'Half Life: Source'. which is really what you're describing there.
I did have this, but never got to play it because i didn't have a good enough PC at the time, and when I did, I no longer had the game, I sold it to my buddy for 30 bucks...Oh well, At least I got the Orange Box.

Nope. Not out yet and doesn't look like it will be out any time soon from the other posts :( But I'll still be waiting for it.

Half-Life:Source is really not the same thing. That is just a straight port of the original code and textures, just with slightly altered water and lighting.

Half-Life 2 source is the original Half-Life, with original maps/characters, albiet better effects and the physics engine in some places. Still looks nearly as bad as the original one did.

THis team said that wasn't good enough, and set about making a fully revamped game, with every single asset redesigned to take advantage of the source engine. They are full of themselves, though, but from the screenies I've seen, at least they are competant...ish.

there was a halflife: source you are right. It was however, just the original game using Source physics. so still the old engine, using physics. So sorry to tell you this syphonz but technically you could have played halflife source before selling it (as long as your pc wasnt 10 years old) :D

the box was a big tin full of t-shirts and bits.

edit: gee, you spend 5 minutes to type and its all been said before :(

One of the main reasons I disliked Half Life 1 was because of the engine. It felt far too... off... if you understand what I mean. I think a remake with the Source engine would be great, and would actually allow me to enjoy the original's story without being distracted by sub-average gameplay.

It could be good, but like everything new these days, I take a Yahtzee approach - IE: Unless it proves otherwise, it's automatically shit. It looks very good indeed, but it's all down to how the thing plays, and we're not going to know that until it's released, so that's why I say 'Could be good'. Soundtrack sounds cool though.

And it's just 'Black Mesa', not 'Black Mesa Source'. Valve sent the team a very nice letter asking them to remove the word Source from the title, as it's copyrighted or something. A couple of others have used the new title, but no-one's full on pointed it out to the thread creator yet.

Deus Ex 2 was recent? :p

But yeah, that's why I never trust anything unless I try it for myself, either with a demo or renting it. I hardly ever buy anything full-price these days, simply because it's easier to know whether something WAS good then whether something's GOING to be good.

I'm really looking forwards to this, though I keep forgetting about it as its taking so long.

I give it 2 weeks or so tops before I forget about it again :(

I played the leak, graphics are not as good as they could be, no where near...

*Edit* My friend had the leak, NOT me, I played on his laptop...

Answer: Could be good.

Questions:
1. Who is making this? Valve?
2. How much?
3. That's about it really. If it's 25 or more $$$, I doubt I'll get it. Appropriately, if you already own the original Half-Life, it should be free to $5, otherwise 15 or 20.

Honestly, it could be good. But I'd just be retreading Black Mesa and Xen again, which is probably the biggest turnoff.

That might be because it is a LEAK and not the fully finished and developed game. The screen shots on the site look very nice so either they are VERY misleading and totally inaccurate or you're judge of "good graphics" and mine are totally different.
