Halo Movie: Should it go ahead? If so, who should direct it, do you think.

I think it should, by the way, probably with Peter Jackson at the helm, like he said he would.

Maybe, but I'd prefer a prequel before they lunge straight into the events of the first game. And when I say maybe, I mean 'Only if it's a mindless summer action film'. If anyone tries anything else, it will go badly, badly wrong.

I don't see why not. As long as who ever directs it doesn't try to win any awards with it and just makes it what it should be (mostly action with a little story that follows the books and games EXACTLY) I think it'l work out.

Yes.

I never really liked the Story of Halo, but at least it has enough of it, and enough promise of action.

However, my definite "Yes" isn't based on the games, but on all those great live action commercials/trailers, like the "Birth of a spartan" one for Reach, the "We Are ODST" one for Halo ODST, as a CGI Exception the "Starry Night" Commercial for Halo 3 and of course Halo:Landfall by District 9 Creator and Ex-Halo Director Neill Blomkamp.

They all showed so much promise on how you could make a Halo film that's not only pretty, but actually great.

I'd really wish they would make a Halo Movie in the style of Saving Private Ryan, one that's not necessarily pro- or anti-war, but one that has a gritty believability and a focus on what the soldiers go through.

While I would like to see the Gears of War movie first, I wouldn't mind if they made Halo into a Movie.

Judging by the live action trailers, yeah it could be really good.

Especially if they can get Neil Blompkamp back to do it, and keep the original score.

I mean this is just great:

As a huge Halo fanboy, I have to say that a Halo film would be awful. I really do love Halo, but they wont be able to capture the cinematic presence that the game's offer.

Fuck yes, After District 9. I would love to see him do more Sci Fi stuff.
I just edited my post to contain a Halo short that he did, have a watch. It's really good!

More to the point it's really a story that's made to be interacted with rather than just watched. The best they could hope to do with it is make, like, a crappy Predator ripoff or a crappy Aliens ripoff with a stock group of multiracial marines.

I mean, let's face it, Master Chief isn't a great hero for a film; he has no face, barely talks (barely needs to for that matter), and is a perfect killing machine. In a video game you have the doubt necessary to create tension because you are him and you can die if you aren't careful. In a film? He's invincible. The fact that he's going to win is as transparent as daylight. Know what they'd do? They'd shoehorn in Shia LeBeouf as a weak, whiny secondary character so that the audience has someone to "relate" to. He'd be the wide-eyed wet-behind-the-ears recruit that we're supposed to identify with but who ABSOLUTELY just annoys the crap out of everyone who goes to see this movie. That's EXACTLY how they'd fuck this up.

If they leave Master Cheif as the dark and mysterious guy...who never shows his face; or has any sex scenes with his ripped muscles on show. Things should be alright.
Keeping to the story without the in-depth crap on personal story should make things smoother.

I'd say go for it. Give it to Neil Blompkamp, give him a decent budget... tell the studio to go fuck them selves and give Neil some freedom... there you go a decent Halo movie. Though I think it would work as a decent mini-series or some thing.

I don't really care.

The story in Halo is no worse then your average "sci-fi" movie these days, with pretty clear conflict and conveniently labeled bad guys. Modern CGI can obviously take care of all the inevitable fighting and science fictiony stuff. The setting is basically already there from games...

It only comes down to plot, and frankly I don't think it would be that hard to come up with a storyline that's based in the same setting as the games, has some kind of significance to it, and can be wrapped up in 2 hours or less.

So, theoretically speaking, there's nothing impossible about it. Hell, it could even be good. Although, given my general cynicism and neutrality to game-based movies and Halo series in general, I don't know. But, you know, all the framework for a fairly successful movie is already there, same thing counts for quite a few of other game-based movies that flopped.

So I can't really say why they end up fucking up every time.

P.S. Master Chief doesn't even have to be the protagonist, y'know? If you're interested in saving his formidable lack of character. Which kind of applies to Gordon Freeman as well if you think about it, hur.
