So I have this friend.
Andrew his name is, I am glad you asked. Now a particular gaming company he develops for and when they toss around ideas for new games the developers are allowed to contribute to their big bubble of ideas until one is picked and put into beta. Whether you believe me or not I could not care less, what matters is that this was an idea I had, it certainly is not original, but it is still very cool.

Millions love the world of Harry Potter, even a new movie is coming out next week here in Canada and I like many others are very excited for it. But it got me thinking if it were to be integrated into an RPG game. I did some research and to my surprise there is NO Harry Potter RPG that is released.

Please fill me in if there is one in development that I am unaware about or one I missed or something like that.
If not, then I can spam your faces with the awesomeness that the fantasy of a Harry Potter RPG would be!

I'm sure you can imagine the expected array of character customization that would begin, making your character, which would then follow choosing your house to be in. And no, taking a gimmicky survey on your personality is not a good idea, let's just get to the point!

After which you may go onto the Hogwarts Express into Harry's Seventh year which he is doing the Horcrux hunting thing. So it is very open to expression and ideas and what ever you got to say. Be good, join the DA, be bad join the Deatheaters. Collect spells in a grimore, duel, customize your dorm room, go to classes and fight the battle of Hogwarts in the end.

Please send ideas, I need them by Friday, that's when they do these meetings.

You would have to make a good game. No shoddy controls, no terrible interface, no tons of bugs and glitches, no crashing and if you can make sure I can pick up anything with WINGARDIUM LEVIOSA!

Old-school, yes, but there was an RPG on the Game Boy Color that I remember playing a ton.

If there was a more recent RPG, I'd probably play it, but it'd have to be a bit different from standard Attack/Magic/Item/Defend setup. You can't exactly just beat up on mystical creatures. Dunno if it'd be good. It'd be hard to do well.

And if you're talking more western RPG style... Meh. Those are meh and would likely collide with the meh that came from the already existing HP games.

I've been saying this should happen for years. A Harry Potter RPG needs to happen, and I'm not counting those older GBC\GBA games, those were too generic. I mean think of all the locations, spells, and potential character classes. There's even several different methods for fast traveling. Point is, all the groundwork for an RPG (Single-player or MMORPG) has been laid out, all we need is for someone to act on it.

I don't think it would be hard at all, like I said all the groundwork is already there. I think the biggest mistake developers could make is just having us play as Harry or characters we already know. I say the game just needs to be set in the Wizarding World.

Honestly? I am a Harry Potter fan. I am also an RPG fan. I would love a good Harry Potter RPG (though whether your idea would form the basis for such a game is up for debate). However, I don't see it happening. For one, you'd need an original story set in the Harry Potter world rather than a game based around any of the seven books. How the Hell would that work? JKR still has the rights to the franchise, and I don't see her giving anyone else free rein. Nor do I see her writing a really good RPG. Plus, what if she wants to return to the universe? I assume she'd like to keep that idea open, so you cannot do anything that would ever have enough of an effect to need to be mentioned in future books. Star Wars has its EU, of course, but that is something of a special case.

tl;dr I'd love a good Harry Potter RPG with an original plot. To be it'll never happen.

I always said this should happen. Harry Potter has such a rich universe and so much potential that to not expand on it would be a waste. Levelling up would be easily explained with just 'your wizard getting cleverer' and there'd be a whole bucketload of moral dilemmas, especially with the freedom of Hogwarts. An MMO would be interesting, then again if it came down to that you'd have 95% people as Gryffindors and about 4.5% of people being Slytherins with the final 0.5% as the other houses.

Sounds like an excellent idea. Its an interesting new setting with plenty of unique gaming opportunities. And RPGs need something fresh.

Actually, there are a surprising amount of Draco fangirls that would gladly hop on the Slytherin train. I myself would probably go with Ravenclaw, but anyway...

This, and another Quidditch game that is online with specialized classes, a la Team Fortress 2. Instantly join teams, pick your position... aw yiss.

I've had this idea for a long time myself except that the story should be outside the story of the novels. Sometime after may be neat introducing some new evil or hell just give seven years of Hogwarts and introduce an evil. Use this to set-up a sequel that carries your character over from the first game in which you fight against said evil. Gives the opportunity to give Hogwarts a full game feel and then after that having a decently prepared character to go off into the world and do battle.

I'd say an MMO could work. What with the 4 distinct Houses and all. I could definitely see an RPG, or an MMO, with the Harry Potter name stamped on it selling modestly well. Just as long as they know from the outset that they will never be WoW. Just play up to the not-so-small niche that is the fanbase.

You are correct sir! The Sorceror's Stone, and the Chamber of Secrets were both RPG games along the lines of the typical JRPG formula. Oddly enough, they tend to be considered the best versions of those particular movie games. Not sure about the others, but even those two took a rather liberal approach to the story.

My guess would be this is more like a LOTR: The Third Age type deal, where you play a group of suspiciously-not-the-main-characters following and somehow performing the exploits of the Fellowship.

Personally I'd opt for an original IP, if by aesthetic only.

I would buy it, if it was executed properly. I wouldn't say so an MMO But instead doing something like Elders Scrolls, an open ended world with TONS of sidequest even after you beat the Amazing Storyline, and you develop your stats any way how. But include online for help on quest and maybe a few exclusive party quest.

I'd love to play one, only if it was executed properly and JK Rowling could be involved in the story. Like a massive MMORPG with customizable characters and options to be good/evil. And Quidditch of course, options to be part of a team :p

Speaking of, I loved the Harry Potter RPGs released back on the Gameboy. Hella fun, but for some reason the makers started focusing on platformers/adventure things.

It could be done very well, with a wow based party format. One in the group can specialise in healing and mending spells (healer), one can specialise in either protection spells or they can transfigure themselves into a bear (tank) or a giant or something big, and the rest can specialise in damage spells.
Would be interesting but i doubt it would be done that way.
You could start playing as a first year, work your way up through the years, learning neat new spells and abilities all the way until you graduate and start working maybe as an Auror or something awesome like that.
Lots of potential.

Good point. And hell yes that would be awesome! They brought out a Quidditch game a good few years back which was terrible, but they could still make a great game from the sport.
