So this just randomly went through my mind today. I have played and finished every GTA game since GTA3 and San Andreeas is the one i liked the most and played for the longest time after finishing the story.
Then it struck me. Although all GTA games were at least GOOD, GTA:SA was awesome because you could drive a train, jumbo jet, bike and also summon a tank, fighter jet, stunt plane, moster truck, tank, jetpack or parachute at any time, compared to other games in this francise. And many other stuff like getting rid of the police instantly, getting best weapons, looking like a greek god etc.

So, dear fellow escapists, did cheats make the GTA experience better for you?

*Vice City`s backward flying tank was awesome
**I`m only talking about the singleplayer part of the games

It's just fun to mess about in Gta games and it makes it even better when you can do with infinate ammo or a tank!

I'd say the cheats are the major downfall of every Grand Theft Auto installment, personally.

Yes, yes, it's a load of fun to stock up on weapons, armour, vehicles and just go on a massive rampage and see how long you last. I agree with that.
There is, however, a point in time where even that becomes boring, and that's what ended up killing every Grand Theft Auto, for me. I tended to break up the story with murder sprees, but it inevitably made me lose interest.

Yes, but not for GTA IV. Now let me explain: GTA III and GTA:SA (never really played Vice City) are very difficult, mostly due to the mechanics of shooting and fighting aren't very good, and thus cheating reduces the frustration of story missions and makes the game more fun. And of course there's the great benefits of having fun in the sandbox with all the cheats.

But in GTA IV, the game was easier, mostly due to better game mechanics, and cheating wasn't necessary. However, it did suffer from less fun in the sandbox without some of the more interesting cheats. But lack of cheating in the story made it much more fun.

So a little bit of both. Given the choice, I'd much rather have all the cheats and just not use them in the story.

"i only play GTA games w/ cheats"

Though I do use correct capitalisation.

Mostly its because I mod my GTA games, a lot, and testing things out is a hell of a lot easier when you don't have to wait for the blasted engine to stop spawning the cars its already loaded rather than new ones in traffic.

Some that are absolutely game-breaking (usually the ability to stop cops chasing you or invincibility) kinda take the fun out of it, but being able to cause any form of mayhem without a drastic amount of set-up or lots of money? It just makes it awesome.

In games that are largely based around fucking things up, it's nice to be able to do that without worrying about getting your ass kicked repeatedly by armed forces. That's the thing about GTA IV it's less about fucking shit up and more about the story, and as a result fucking shit up is a lot harder to do without getting your ass killed.

Man these are some good pancakes.

OT: I never played a GTA game besides 3, and even then i had no idea of any cheats, but i did have fun driving a car around into people and stuff.

cheats are fun for goofing around but i never use them to help beat the game.

I still have fond memories of me and my firend playing GTA Vice city and useing the weapon cheat to get a ton of RPG ammo and then climbing up on to the roof of a building and seeing how much shit we could blow up before the cops took us down.

I instinctively voted "pancakes" but I think the cheats can make someone's playing of the game more fun better, it just doesn't do it for me. They make me feel dirty whenever I use them.

edit: changed "more fun" to "better".

I always play through them first first, before looking for any cheats, so I can expierence them in all their difficulty first.

The pedestrian weapons/riot cheats made for fantastic fun once you had done everything else in the game.

Yeah, pretty much. I don't recall playing a GTA game without them.

They made Saint's Row a lot more fun, too.

...I don't care much for the thread, well I did at first, but then I saw the original poster's Avatar, and well, my head exploded.

They take away from the atmosphere when characters are "doing it for the money" when they have $23798572389562385623895629619 and a bigger weapons stock than all of the NRA members put together but they also add to the fun so it depends on what you want in the game.
