I know I freaked out when Johnny Gat was impaled.
Out of every character I've ever played, Mr. Gat was the only one I ever really cared about. What about you?

inb4 John Marston. Also, I know a lot of people won't take kindly to it, but Final Fantasy games. ...Most notably VII.

I kind of care about my main Shepard, but I don't think that really counts since I shaped her myself :p

I've cared for almost all the characters in Metal Gear Solid. I know I'm not the only one who shed a tear at the end of MGS4.

Also, yes, John Marston and Vivi from FF IX.

I remember feeling torn when in HL2 ep2.... (better spoiler)
when Alyx gets pounced by that hunter and impaled/stomped, while you're trapped under that building, and you had to wait for that vortigaunt (blah spelling block) to let you out from under the rubble. I got quite upset, probably because there was nothing you could do but watch it happen. :( here's video incase anyone forgot how that went:

I like that the guy you cared about was the guy who's probably more psychotic than the player character.

OT: I cared about John...

I am way too empathic for my own good; I connect to EVERY character of any media, be it book, game, film, painting, comic, tapestry images...

errrrrrrrr well sort of, I have cared about the characters in the shape of the storyline but I have never ever emotionally connected with a character on a personal level as it were and this isnt just games but movies and books as well I always see them as they are one and I am another there is no resonance. To put it another way there has been no blurring of the line even though the other side of the line may touch me in a way real life never can.

A great deal of the Mass Effect cast, most notably Liara and Garrus. Seriously, when I lost Garrus on my first round of ME2, I felt awful for days. The scene where Tali finds her father got me really choked up, too, especially with the Paragon option.

Oh Tommy Angelo- by far the most connectable sandbox character. I miss him. Though Sean Devlin and Ezio are pretty good too.

Come to think of it, just about everyone from Mafia. Except Sam. Goddamn did he know how to get shot in the gut every mission and require me to save his butt.

Mass Effect is a game that excels at making you feel that the characters that you are with are real people. And hell I felt like the Normandy was my home. You feel that you are this person and what you are doing means something to the universe. Plus Tali is the cutest goddamn character of all time.
