I'm not talking about baby taps and dead arms and stuff here, but real blows with the intent to cause damage. Personally I find it a difficult thing to do, though I have thrown a few in my life. Each time I was really enraged and lost control of myself. I've never thrown a punch in defense, or even desperation. My rational mind just won't allow it.

ED: if anyone finds a missing poll, send it this way.

God, I wish. But I usually keep my hands cool because the cost of punching someone was higher than the pleasure I would get from knocking a few of their teeth loose.

Yeah a few times, two in particular stand out, one was self defense from some guys hasseling my friends and the other ejecting someone from a party who was being a colosossal dick. I regretted the latter, as I was old enough to possibly be sued or charged with assault, even if it was deserved I crossed a line and should have kept my calm.

Both times I noticed how punches are never as cool as they are in movies, they hurt your hand and never land where you want. I hit a guy in the sternum because he moved at the last minute, the only consolation is I know how bad that hurts.

Oh yeah. I think being a pub goer in the UK requires that i'm eventually gonna have to hit someone.

Self defence only though, and it always hurts like a ***** afterwards unless I hit them in the stomach or throat. Especially if you go for a throat punch and they bring their chin down on it. Either way you're knocking them on their arse, but you'll push a knuckle out of place doing it.

It's actually pleasing winning a fight that someone else started with you, surprisingly. That always worried me slightly.

Edit: I will note that it seems the more I fight the less it happens. Its been a while since I was last involved in an actual brawl. I suppose the more it happens the more you avoid it.

I'm better at kicking, or slamming, or ramming, or throwing. Yes, I have had a chance to do some of these things.

Punching people in the throat is a bad idea. My brother in law got punched there and it killed him. The guy who did it got three years. So yeah, don't do it.

There's certainly some satisfaction in it though. One guy I punched, dragged him to the door and ejected him from my house. I felt like the man afterwards, even though I was shaking like a *****.

Once on my best friend.

It was a reflex.

See, he'd accidentally hit me in the mouth with some plastic tube thing in the pool, and it really freakin hurt. And by reflex, I punched him.

That's the only time I've ever punched someone. :s I'm not the type who likes to get into fights.

Considering I have zero upper body strength that would be a very bad idea. However, my long chicken like legs could really hurt someone not that I ever had to ...

I've got myself into a number of brawls in my time in school. So I'm not scared to throw a punch given the situation and opportunity, I only dodge hits and block hits when I fight now, I'm a thoughtful fighter.

No, I know how to, but its something that can end very badly. You meet someone who can fight better than you or just as bad the cops are called out.

Its always best to walk away or use less damaging grapple and tackle techniques. Never make yourself look like the bad guy in a fight

Yes, but only in controlled environments... having been to a few kickboxing tournies, so yeah, I'd've had to punch to cause damage (or at least try to, anyway, given my somewhat lousy record...), as well as kick...

Reagan Economides. I had to check 2 year books to find that fucking name because he dropped out of high school.

Anyway it was Middle School, probably 8th grade and, as was my usual mental condition I was pissed off at...something. I dunno, I was an angry teen. Anyway, I was late for class and he was annoying me then after a bit of taunting (he was my best friend at the time by the way), I punched him right in his stupid, fat, face. No blood but he told me I loosened one of his teeth.

I probably shouldn't have checked out those year books because now I'm feeling nostalgic...*sigh*

Yes. When I was 14 or something. I doubt I actually hit any hard, but I went straight for the guys nose, sort of as a warning to back the hell off. And it worked :D

haha I have had to do all of the above at some point and no Im not some thug that goes looking for fights. I haven't had one in years but when I was younger I had a few, things just happen sometimes.

To answer the OP, I think most men at some point will punch someone else in the face. Its a natural reaction in moment of intense rage or self defense, although most of the time a punch thrown with all that adrenaline behind it, isn't the best thing to do ever. It can lead to broken fingers and hands. Faces and skulls are hard and a miss gives an opponent an instant upper hand.

In the self defense situation (say in a pub and a guy just goes you out of nowhere), the best defense if a swift punch to the guts, then tackle to the ground. Once on the ground, its up to you how far you want to take it. If you can while a top, a hard elbow to the centre of the chest will render them winded in in a sort of 'shock' state for a bit. These sound brutal but in a situation where you don't know the person you are fighting, it crucial to get instant dominance and the upper hand. I wouldn't do any of this stuff if it were with say a fight with a family member. They are more 'throw a few haymakers and end up in an awkward wrestling match'.

I can't remember it myself, but a friend of mine did insist that I once pushed a kid to the ground, jumped on him with my knees and proceeded to hit him with a sort of hammering motion with both arms. I was 5 at the time, allegedly.
*shrug*

There was this time a year or two ago when a girl in my class snuck up behind me and poked my sides.
I'm horribly ticklish, so I spun around, throwing out my fist entirely by reflex. I managed to stop the motion before I reached her face though.
People stopped doing that to me then.

Generally I don't need to, but if provoked anything goes. I tend to shy away from these sorts of engagements because I don't know how far I'll take it once the punches start going.

How can you admit to throwing punches when you lose control, and then say you cannot in defense because your "rational" mind wont allow it? Obviously, you dont have a rational mind.

Ive punched a few people years ago in grade school when i had problems with the douche-bags. Wish I could do it more often, I like fighting. But I try and avoid physical conflicts until all other options are exhausted. (thats a rational mind)
