Hail to the fellow Escapists,

I am planning to get a console after 20 years of PC gaming. Not that I am bored of it, I still play Civilization regularly, install thousands of mods to Fallout NV and enjoy a FPS every now and then. I just want to experience different types of gaming; third person action games are not that fun on PC (darksiders is a good example), JRPGs are non existant (Breath of Fire 4 was the last one I can remember) and playing with friends when they come over is kinda hard on a 26" monitor. I still have a really good gaming computer (and will have in the future as I use it for my work)

Probably it is clear already what I am looking in my console so I will list pros and cons of each system for me.

XBOX 360 + Kinect

+Kinect : I love music & dancing and I think devs will find great ways to use this little toy. Also exercise games will be a plus. Learning to play this way won't be more difficult than learning to use a controller because both of them are new to me. PS Move is completely pointless for me.
-XBOX Live Tax: I am not an online gamer so I will get the Silver one. However I might wanna have a match on street fighter every now and then and can't do it unless I get the PS3.
-Large TV: For Kinect I have to get a large screen TV. With PS3 I can just use my full HD monitor.
+-Windows 8: If Windows 8 will be able to run XBOX 360 games then there is no point in buying the console. On the other hand, having full Kinect support on my PC might be pretty sweet.

PS3
+More exclusive games: Pretty obvious I suppose (Infamous + Heavy Rain vs. Alan Wake). Most of XBOX 360 exclusive games show up on PC after a couple of years anyways.
-PSN: We all know about the huge mess right?

I am asking this because I really don't know much about consoles (please don't hesitate to correct any of my mistakes/assumptions). I don't care about the FPS, Western RPG, MMO and Strategy performance of these consoles so no need to remind me how Halo, Resistance, Mass Effect etc. are awesome.

Thanks

PS: It is a Manowar reference not Hitler.

I'd say you've already made up your mind on this. You want a PS3. Not my choice, but each to their own.

I think I slightly prefer the XBOX just for Kinect. Getting input from people actually using them feels like the right thing to do.

Not many people use Kinect and from personal experience it isn't very good anyways. Go with the PS3.

(But please continue PC gaming. Since you could afford a gaming PC it already trumps the consoles. If anything for third person games you could always buy a controller for your PC and play with that. I have Darksiders myself and you're right with the pc controls.)

I would have without question said PS3 up until the crisis they had with hackers and their blatant non-care attitude up until the point they were forced to care in a huge 72 million way.

The PS3 is superior console. No question, there can be game to game streamlining differences where the XBox360 wins but the superior base the PS3 wins overall. A lot of large exclusives or a short period exclusives get on the side of the XBox360 but if you don't like the games they get then PS3 no question.

The Kinetic is shit... it is actually quite a good piece of hardware for the price but unless you're part of the army and intend to modify it... no... leave it alone. Its dreadful for "gaming".

If you haven't already then make your first PS3 purchase Portal 2. If you buy portal 2 on the PS3... you get a free PC version on steam :p If you've got it nvm.

Admittedly there are certain games that... well... the console is just miles superior for. Assassins creed... prime example. Not only having a controller (a rare situation where a controller is an advantage) but also a system where there won't be lag because the whole game is at an appropriate graphical level rather than a certain scene where there are lots of people slowing down the game so the actions and sound actually break sync for some illogical reason.

... sorry I ranted about AC2 >.>
Get a PS3

I'm a PS3 guy, but honestly, the current Generation is by far the most balanced yet, so I think you'd be equally as well-off if you had either.

I will definitely continue PC gaming. That is where I feel at home and I am lucky enough to avoid bugs in Obsidian games. Seriously, for some reason I never encountered a bug in NVN2, KOTOR2, Alpha Protocol and Fallout NV in my first runs. Alpha Protocol kinda freaked out when I cheated for the second run and F NV crashes sometimes after 30+ mods though. I got the darksiders knowing that the game isn't very good. There was just no decent alternatives at the time and I never played a Zelda game (which darksiders "borrows heavily" according to Yahtzee). After that and assassins creed, I think it is impossible to simulate 4 trigger buttons of controllers on keyboard. I played starcraft, warcraft, red alert enough to handle a lot of keys on the keyboard, it just doesn't feel natural with third person games.
I already played Portal 2. It would have taken at least 3 times longer to finish it (that is not a bad thing actually).
You can rant about AC series all you want. The next one will be in Istanbul :) I can't wait to see it (the Turkish speaking templars in AC1 was kinda strange though).
I guess I really should get a PS3. I am just lazy because I have to sell the XBOX 360 from the Microsoft's student deal (buy 1 of 20 win7 machines, get XBOX 360 free).
