So both games are currently available on sale. War of the Roses is 55% off on Paradox's own new store, and Chivalry has a free weekend and 50% off.

Chivalry is minimally cheaper but both are at about the same price (~13-15 bucks).

I enjoy the combat in Mount and Blade Warband immensely, but in multiplayer I always get owned so bad that it ain't fun anymore. So I'm tempted to go for one of the two games above for multiplayer medieval action.

Which is preferable? I'm looking for something accessible, yet deep enough to not be shallow.

If you have another suggestion please describe in detail.

Thanks!

Edit: Oh forgot to ask, how are the network performance and matchmaking solved in the games? In Mount and Blade I often have an annoyingly hard time finding the right server. (My latency is good for most multiplayer games, but in M&B I have a ping of 180 on average). An automated matchmaking system a la CS:GO would be ideal.

I've played both and I have to say that of those two, I enjoyed Chivalry more.

For one, having to move the mouse to indicate what direction I was swinging wasn't something I particularly enjoyed in WotR or Mount and Blade. In Chivalry, you click LMB or use the scroll wheel up and down (heavy overhead and stab). To block, you click RMB and aim at the top of their weapon. A nice mix of simple and complex when put in practice.

Secondly, the spawn system and "perks" are beyond broken in WotR. You'll be fighting this guy off of your flag one on one for a few minutes, and then he diarrhea dumps men all over the place (game uses Battlefield-esque squad spawning). Unless you're a squad leader, you're done because reinforcements are elsewhere. Chivalry uses a set spawn area and has more objectives than capturing flags. It's like if Team Fortress 2 popped out a baby with the source mod Chivalry is based off of. Bonus points goes to it for having more classes than "Heavily armored crossbowman with a fire-poker and winged feet" (WotR inside joke).

Finding a server is mostly the same ordeal in both titles (choosing from a list), but I think Chivalry might be a tad better.

Well, I haven't played either, so I can't give you a concrete recommendation, but I am a regular member of the Warband AUS community and have been told by quite a few people that Chivalry is rather decent while War or the Roses is a complete and utter pile of shit. Like I said, I can't really tell you from myself, but that's what I've heard from a number of Warband veterans.

Well I would wait for the free weekend for Chivalry and try that out first.

I own both games and honestly I find games easier to find in Chivalry but War of the roses may have less games but they feel more worthwhile in the long run. Personally I like both games for different reasons. War of the roses have much more skill based combat but it also feels floaty. Yet chivalry has much more depth in its attack system its also pretty ugly when compared with games of today
