Well I was watching zero punctuation and I was thinking about a statement yahtzee made. Roughly paraphrased as "the cosmic monstrocity loses alot of scaryness when you attach a human face to it". And this got me thinking...is this true? Personally I believe that men are far scarier then any monster because you dont expect them to be evil. Once again paraphrasing yahtzee-"Men are reasonable, they go to the toilet and eat branston pickle." And I think thats what keeps them scary. You expect a "cosmic monstrocity" to grind peoples bones into dust and snort it like the newest batch of cocaine. Whereas you expect a man to eat branston pickle but when he instead opts for his stash of baby-heart-samiches and offers you a bite you know shit just got real.

It depends how it's handled really. A man becoming a monster is pretty bad - go watch "The Almost People" (Dr Who, sN6, e6) for a good recent example near the end.

But a person always gives the impression of being reasonable at some level, otherwise they'd have ended up eating their own minions before you even got close. A true monster is an uncaring thing of utter chaos and evil, and can appear in shapes that themselves alone will drive you insane.

A human form can hide some truly horrific supernatural properties in a well crafted story however. I can't really hop down on either side of this particular fence.

I'd actually say monsters are scarier since we can never know the way their mind works whereas if you up against a man, no matter how crazy he is, you can still relate and guess what he's thinking because you're also human. The only thing that really makes men scarier then monsters in our world is that cosmic monstrosities don't exist but crazy blood-thirsty people do.

I am tempted to say man, if only because if most movies are to be believed we would shoot at monsters at first sight anyway. Monsters seem so foreign to our being that our response is usually to resist or destroy. Man can get trickier though and even fake it a bit.

Though that is more of judgment by looks alone. I'm sure there is a point where a man gets crazy enough that he starts to stop looking like a man.
