Hiya escapists.

So, I just came back from going horseback riding with some friends and family. I haven't done it very often (2 or 3 times perhaps), but it is a lot of fun.
We rode Icelandic horses, they're rather small and good at maneuvering terrain.

Therefore I felt like asking you: Can you ride/have you ridden a horse?

Feel free to use this thread for discussing other topics of the equine variety.

Edit: Note to self: The escapist community does not seem to be particularly interested in horses...

I've ridden a horse on holliday. But I had more of the feeling that that horse was doing what it pleased and just tolerated me as it sometimes went running while I wanted it to calm down for the sake of my nutsack. But other than that, it was great fun! The horse I was riding on wanted to be the leading one in the line so bit the arse of the horse a friend of mine was riding on.

Riding a horse isn't particularly hard, they're pretty intuitive thanks to years of training. It's easier than driving at any rate. I've done it a few times, probably almost a dozen. That said, I can't do important things like properly saddle a horse or care for one. I had one bad experience with a horse that was much too large and and in control for my skill level. Getting up to a full run is extremely exciting and scary.

I would very much suggest it to anyone though, it's a great experience.

I can't ride. I've only been on one horse, and then I found out I'm allergic to them. No more horse riding for me.

To me it seems a bit of a feminine thing to do, nowadays. I haven't ridden a horse no, I'd fear I'd injure my balls if I did do it.

By myself, no. I sat on a pony and had it trot around the area with some guy holding the reigns before though, but being about 5 it scared me to death. They're nice animals and all but I don't think I'd like to actually ride one.

Nah man, look at all those Western films, and Lord of the Rings movies and stuff. Horse Riding is still pretty masculine I reckon.

I'd love to try it and hopefully will one day. I just have this kinda distrust of horses for some reason. I cant figure out why though as all the horses I've come into contact with were nice. I think it's just 'cos they're so fucking big.

Then trying an Icelandic might be something for you. They're quite small. I think the horse I rode was no taller than my shoulders (not counting its head).

Ahh cool, I have some friends who went on a school trip to Iceland and rode the Icelandic horses, they really enjoyed it. They're really cute too :)

Not sure if it would be easy to find one to ride in Britain though :\

Also; I know it's a silly question, but are horses kinda the same as bikes? Where you have to have one the proper size for you to be able to control it and be comfortable on it? 'Cos I'm a pretty tall guy, and as you said Icelandic horses seem to be fairly small.

I can ride a moderately trained one, but as long as I don't have to parallel park...

Link I am not. I'm more likely to sell Epona to Tingle's Rosy Glue Factory than ever think about riding her.

Yes, but never owned any (expensive). I was decent, except for making it speed up/slow down.

I have, and it was fun.
Except for the utter destruction it gave my upper legs and balls.

I rode a horse once. Thing is, I got off about 30 seconds after. I thought the horse was going to go insane and buck me off. Plus, I don't like the feeling of being that high.

I have ridden horses and love to do so but I don't have one and the only people who would let me ride theirs moved away.

Size doesn't matter much for beginners other than comfort considerations. Many people find large horses intimidating. The big thing is training.
