I've just been playing the thoroughly adequate Call Of Duty: Black Ops and something came to mind (and was reinforced by Yahtzee's comments).

Would anyone else really like to play an FPS/3rd person shooter AGAINST America?
Don't get me wrong, this is not a hate post against the Yank nation, more a fun idea that's been done in plenty of games previously (ie. allowing you to play as the 'enemy').

For example, do you remember how cool it was when you first got to play as the bosses in Street Fighter II or as Darth Vader in some (crappy) Star Whores game?

My point is, it would kick ass to play as the Viet Cong, Iraquis or Talban scum.

This would be particularly awesome since you could be the underdog and use stealth/sabotage/underhand tactics to manipulate/terrorize/steal weapons from the mighty American Empire.

Id prefer if you didnt played as the enemy, it should be potraid as a diferent side and not the evil one. War has two sides, they have their ideals and none of them is the good one or the evil one.

I liked that in COD MW2 we ended up fighting against americans, but not because they were americans, just because IW had the balls to stop making America the source of all good in video games.

When will we ever be able to play as Nazi Germany? I want to be the bad guys for once, dammit.
It would be a welcome change of perspective. Something new in the world of gaming.

1: It wouldn't sell. It just wouldn't.
2: It would be TOO controversial. Remember the furore that occured when EA tried to offer you the chance to play as the Taliban, in multiplayer only? (even if it was just a publicity stunt) And imagine Fox News - even if we clearly portrayed the player characters as villains and had them suffer a downfall, they're unlikely to let it slip by unnoticed I'm afraid.
Basically, it's not going to be possible, not at the moment when we have soldiers fighting overseas and a hyperactive media.

I would LOVE invading the entirety of America as Russia.

In a Red alert kind of way.

Don't go telling me you don't feel like nuking some country when you hear this.

The Pentagon zombie map shocked me by implementing American Zombies, I didn't expect them to do that..

MW2 was pretty good at making the Americans the bad guys, it would have been even better if the SAS, abandoned, elements of TF141 had teamed up with the Russians and NATO to totally balls up America, that I would like to see.

If David Cameron (British PM (2010-15) came on telly and announced war on the USA then I would defiantly vote for his party (Conservative) in 2015.. Well I have to vote Tory anyway, my avatar dictates that I do....

First off its Iraqis and Taliban and secondly, YES I WOULD LOVE TO FIGHT AMERICA! Or at least not to keep playing as Americans, it's just old and repetitive.

USA is not the 'good guy'. Playing as an enemy of USA would be preferable.

By playing as America you are playing as the bad guys.

Although they try to do the right thing, it's usually the wrong way and for the wrong reasons.

I completely disagree with the first point. This is something people would buy big time if done by a big name developer.

Your second point, however, is entirely true. The press and various groups would destroy the game and possibly prevent its release. If it came out though, I'd picture it having a KFC Double DOwn like effect...and sell huge on the basis of curiosity.

Wouldn't fly. The second you shift focus from apple pie baseball cap sweet sweet America to "The Enemy", every one would have something unpleasant to say about it. I mean, killing Middle Easterners is one thing, but killing white Americans? Fuck, that's just wrong.

Also Fox News. I'm Australian, and I still fear Fox News.

I would like to point out that few of these ideas even make sense. Reasonably speaking, if you want a "modern" game where you fight the US, you would have to do so while they were invading some other country. The reason is simple enough - without a mystical wave of the hand removing our strategic arsenal, the US possesses the firepower to vitrify a nation. That little nugget is the reason why the nations with nuclear weapons tend to not fight wars with one another directly.

So, basically, that means that a game that involves shooting Americans would not reasonably involve Russia, the UK, France or China with a reasonable nod to Pakistan and India (I do not know off hand if either nation possess the means to reasonably deliver a strategic weapon to the US in volume).

Of course, in MW2 Russia does invade the US but it goes quite poorly for them as they are quickly halted in their tracks. Honestly, that alone was the stupidest thing in MW2. Sure you magic away the nuclear option and achieve complete strategic surprise. And then you don't strike with nuclear weapons but invade by air. Light Infantry and Mechanize/Motorized Infantry versus armor and local air support. Russia sent those men to die plain and simple.

If it got to market, it'd probably sell based on the controversy.

Everything else you're saying is pretty valid, though. They would be absolutely crucified by the media.

Based on the fact that Medal of Honor barely sold despite all the furore AND EA's marketing efforts I'm going to say it's unlikely. I acknowledge the possibility but I just think most people would go "Why? Why the villain? I just want to play".
Why do I think that? I just think most people are looking to try and play the all-American hero and if they aren't given that opportunity they will look elsewhere. I also think trying to beat COD is a bit of a fruitless exercise at the minute because of the brand identity it has.

I suspect you mean that it would not sell in the US. But the gaming world is much bigger than just one country.

But yes Fox would have a field day.

This reminds me of something. A completely crazy and ridiculous idea I once had. Allow me to link.

http://fc03.deviantart.net/fs70/i/2010/077/b/4/In_the_future__Kazakhstan_by_El_Jonno.png

Never mind that you can't see the little annotations (still haven't figured out how to make it zoom-in-able) the basic gist is an all-out war between everyone ever - completely tongue-in-cheek, of course. It would make for some pretty hilarious gaming, when you think about it. No matter which faction you're a part of. And some of them would get to fight Americans...
