So I finally started playing Persona 4. People kept telling me that it was so much better than Persona 3 because they removed the fatigue system. Yeah, but they also removed the easy SP recovery (Persona's mana). This, to put it mildly, sucks. Instead they put in a system where you can restore your SP for an astronomical price, which means if you want to complete the dungeons in a timely (in-game) fashion you need to spend hours of real time farming for cash just to get your SP back. Magic is critical in Persona's combat systems, btw.

So it had me thinking, aren't limited mana systems like so ten years ago? I loves me my japanese RPGs but I'm starting to feel all games should move towards the Bioware-style of cooldown timers or quick non-combat regeneration. Maybe I'm the only one?

I like the Final Fantasy X system. Just makes it easy to track and is easy to get your head around.

I like cooldown timers. It allows you to string a huge number of spells together if you time it right.

Do the Hermit S Links, and the prices will drop dramatically. I voted for Potions/Resting.

The standard mana system is good, but if cooldowns were very short then CD's ftw

I generally prefer either the limited spell usage (Mother, FF) or gradual MP recovery (Golden Sun, Magical Starsign, Oblivion).

Mana is good for real time games, and I think magic points are good for strategy games or turn based games. It depends what I'm playing.

I believe that's one reason I love Disgaea... Cheap to heal, cheap to restore MP, and (after leveling up enough) You don't have to worry about any of that anyway. You get to the point where you could spam your strongest, most MP draining attack 2000 times, and you'd still be able to cast it over 10 times that amount...

Oblivions is my favourite mana system. Simple and effective, unlike 90% of the original spells.

Potions and items took waay to long to get in Persona 4. However, since you could pretty much rush a dungeon without really worrying about healing/restoring mp, it wasn't that bad.

Standard mp (using potions) works well with the turn based combat, and skills shouldn't be unlimited there (there's always an overpowered spell that everyone can get, and everyone will spam it)

Regen works well with the MMO's and active games. You're limited a bit on the skill cycling, but since you're actively controlling your character, you can still stay active in a fight, even if you're a squishy.

yeah, I can definitely agree with you here, I can't honestly say I've played another game with mp that handled mp in a way that I've liked as much as disgaea's system... except maybe games where at the end of every battle you're fully healed, but those are few and far between.

I like the fable 2 way of magic use the whole charge for strength was a good idea but seeing as that's not an option recharging oblivion style

I love memorizing spells. It gives a tactical aspect to battles.

Other than that mana system with no recharge is my second preference. You should think what you will cast.

Cooldown is ideal for mmos.

But one thing i hate is mana recharge.(including easy to use mana potions)

Well, I think Star Ocean (3 and 4) work. In SO3, there was never a problem with MP, and I could always cheaply refill it whenever I needed. In SO4, it was the same ease to refill as SO3, but you had a chance to refill it at the end of battle, too.

Gimme regen. Slow is preferred to fast, in the cases where magic is really powerful.

My preference is basic MP with limited or no regeneration, items that restore some, but not all, and resting to recover. Kingdom of Loathing. =)
